The Patriots re-signed WR Austin Collie.

Fantasy Impact:

The Patriots must have Collie on speed dial at this point as it's the third time they've signed him this season. The signing is an indicator that Aaron Dobson (foot) and/or Josh Boyce (ankle) may miss the Divisional Round playoff game in Foxboro next week.

Patriots announce WRs Aaron Dobson (foot) and Kenbrell Thompkins (hip) have been downgraded to OUT for tomorrow's game.

Fantasy Impact:

It looks like we'll be seeing a lot of Shane Vereen, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola in the passing game. Josh Boyce and maybe even Austin Collie will see some looks as well.

When the New England Patriots released veteran Austin Collie last Tuesday after he injured his knee, it created a void at the No. 4 receiver spot.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was asked Monday about the team's plans to fill it, and his answer provided insight as to how the coaching staff currently views the receiver depth chart.

First, McDaniels said that the idea of settling on a top three (Aaron Dobson, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola) has been part of the mindset, with the idea of "being able to try to have some consistency in terms of the things we are doing with those guys."

So that puts rookies Kenbrell Thompkins and Josh Boyce as the top candidates to vie for Collie's playing time in the No. 4 spot, which averaged 22 snaps per game over the past three weeks. Both were healthy scratches last week against the Steelers.

Fantasy Impact:

Thompkins value has really fallen. Aaron Dobson's monster game in Week 9 seems to have etched him among the Pats top-three WRs, and he's playing the most snaps weekly. And, with Danny Amendola healthy, Thompkins will now battle just to be active every week.

The Patriots have released WR Austin Collie, according to a league source.

Fantasy Impact:

Collie was active last week in favor of Kenbrell Thompkins, but when Collie had to leave the game, it left that Pats short at WR.

Patriots sign Austin Collie

The Patriots have signed veteran WR Austin Collie, according to a league source.

Fantasy Impact:

The Patriots' receiving corps is pretty banged up at the moment, so this may be a signing purely to give the team some depth. Collie may be worth a pickup in very deep leagues, but in standard 12-team formats, he's simply a player to monitor.

Wide receiver Austin Collie isn’t in the 49ers’ plans. Collie has a nice NFL resume (his 173 career catches are the second-most on the team among WRs behind Anquan Boldin) but Jim Harbaugh indicated during training camp Collie wasn’t fully recovered from the ruptured patella tendon he sustained last year. On Sunday, Collie didn’t play until late in the third quarter and had an eight-yard catch in 14 snaps.

Fantasy Impact:

Wide receivers Quinton Patton, Marlon Moore and Jon Baldwin likely aren’t going anywhere so Collie was buried down the depth chart pretty deep. He could find work later in the season.

Anquan Boldin and Kyle Williams appear to be ahead of the 49ers' other wide receivers. Rookie Quinton Patton has been unable to catch passes during training camp due to an injury to the index finger on his left hand, but his spot on the roster is secure.

Fantasy Impact:

It took a while for the writer to mention Austin Collie. The 49ers' WR2 spot won't hold too much fantasy value, not with Boldin and Vernon Davis (fingers crossed) eating up most of the targets.

Aside from Anquan Boldin, Austin Collie the only healthy(ish) receiver on the 49ers roster who has been a steady contributor at the position in the past. The early signs have been good.

Collie is picking up the offense quickly, made two big catches against Denver and seems focused and eager to resume his career. The risk, of course, is his propensity for injuries, especially concussions. Collie still hasn't gone full bore due to last year's knee injury.

Still, all signs are pointing in the right direction for him.

Fantasy Impact:

Collie is certainly trending up our charts. He's 66th at the moment but that would change if he were to win the WR2 job. Injuries are a concern but he was always a reliable target when he was able to stay on the field.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said he expected a bigger practice workload this week for his two newcomer receivers, Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins. Both were signed on Aug. 2 and have been worked into the ends of practices and the end of Thursday's preseason game. Neither has received any extensive work starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick to this point.

"I think they will this week, yes," Harbaugh said of increased work. "Pleased with what they're doing, definitely. They're studying hard, working hard to get out there and chomping at the bit to be out there."

Fantasy Impact:

Collie is an interesting name to keep an eye on. The 9ers need a WR2 to step up and with 11 WRs in camp, Collie still has a chance. Obviously past concussions are the concern here.

No one has said when exactly Mario Manningham will return. However, he and Kendall Hunter both have been rehabilitating on a side field during practices. Hunter has been doing more -- cutting, pulling heavy chains, sprinting at full speed -- than Manningham, and Hunter still hasn't been cleared for practice. I realize their injuries are different - Hunter tore his Achilles' while Manningham had a torn ACL - and that could account for differences in their rehab routines. But it still seems as if Manningham has a few more steps to go before he can get back on the field.

As for stealing the No. 2 role ... Remember, Manningham never was the no. 2 receiver in New York. He came in on third downs, which was similar to his role with the 49ers last year. I'm not sure the 49ers see him (or Kyle Williams, for that matter) as an every-down type player. They are small guys, and their injuries last year only reinforce the concern that they can't withstand every-down pounding for 16 or more games. It's another reason to expect some sort of rotation at the position during the season.

Fantasy Impact:

Hunter figures to be the primary backup to Frank Gore once he gets healthy. Manningham will be in the mix for snaps at WR2 when he makes his return. The team recently signed Austin Collie to compete for snaps as well.
