Patriots coach Bill Belichick would probably prefer to carry four running backs instead of five, and that precept likely means LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden are competing for the final spot.
Blount needs a good preseason because his physical style isn’t as impressive in practice against his own teammates, but in the game, he was tougher to knock out than Rocky Balboa. If Blount keeps that up, it will supersede Bolden’s special teams contributions. Blount looked like a legitimate option to back up Stevan Ridley, and that’s going to be necessary if the Pats will really dedicate themselves to the running game.
Blount likely has the edge after a very good game against a poor Eagles defense. There was already talk that Bolden would be the odd-man-out prior to camp.
