John Carney returns to Saints as a kicking consultant

The Saints have brought recently released kicker John Carney back into the fold. He won't be kicking field goals in games, however.

Carney, a veteran of 21 seasons, was hired as a kicking consultant by the Saints, the team announced Thursday afternoon.

As the kicking consultant, Carney will be responsible for helping out with all three phases of the placekicking process - snap, hold and kick. He'll also work closely with young kicker Garrett Hartley.

The rarely used consultant position means Carney can't kick for the Saints or any other team this season.

"He's going to help us just in regards to the operation of snap, hold, kick," Saints Coach Sean Payton said. "It's interesting to listen to his thoughts. I think he is a great mentor for Garrett, and he's a guy that has been great for our team. So I know he's excited about it."
