For the first time in quite a while, Jason Hanson is heading into an offseason of uncertainty.
Hanson certainly will be back for a 19th season when the Lions start camp in July. The Lions, however, typically have invited another kicker to camp as an insurance policy.
This year, that kicker could be competing for the starting spot.
Hanson, 39, made one field goal longer than 50 yards this season and had four touchbacks on kickoffs. He was 21-for-28 on field goals for 75 percent, his lowest percentage since 2001 and the fourth lowest of his career.
