If there were any questions left about whether or not the Colts need to add a premier lead back — a question that stubbornly seemed to hang on to certain corners of the Internet this offseason — they should finally, completely be answered after Sunday’s performance.
Marlon Mack brought the Colts back from the dead in the third quarter, taking a handoff to the left, got big blocks from Ryan Kelly and Quenton Nelson, shot through the hole and broke a diving tackle attempt, then out-ran the Chargers secondary to the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown run.
The story added: Mack ground out the important yards, pounding his way for conversions on a pair of third-and-shorts and the all-important two-point conversion near the end of regulation. Mack put his patience on display at times, waiting for holes to develop; other times he showcased his balance. By the time he was finished, Mack had 174 yards, the most for any Colts runner since Edgerrin James ripped off 204 against the Bears in 2004. As long as Mack stays healthy, he has all of the talent and the offensive line in front of him to become a breakout star.
