Cerrato resigns; Redskins hire Allen

The Washington Redskins hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen on Thursday, shortly after executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato resigned.

Allen becomes the first person hired by owner Daniel Snyder to hold the title of general manager.

A news conference was expected to be held Thursday afternoon to announce the hiring of Allen, who also worked in the Oakland Raiders front office.

In a statement released by the team Thursday morning, Cerrato said he has had numerous conversations with Snyder the past few weeks about the team's future.

"We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position," Cerrato said in a statement released by the team. "I'm thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I've been given over the years."
