The Training Room: Week 2 Injury Updates

It seems like each and every year there are always major names who suffer key injuries at the start of the season causing owners to shuffle from the get-go. This year is no different as many of the top fantasy names are dealing with injuries, some minor and some that are going to be multi-week injuries. Let's take an initial look at the injuries that occurred in Week 1. (Updated on 9/14/19)

Tyreek Hill, WR Chiefs

Injury: Dislocated SC Joint

Timetable For Recovery: 6-8 Weeks

Potential Replacement: Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson

Comments: The Chiefs are putting a 4-6 week timetable on Hill's collarbone injury, and while that could absolutely be possible, I would tend to believe that it'll take longer for him to get back up to speed. For now Hardman and Sammy Watkins will be the ones who benefit the most with Hill being out.

Patrick Mahomes, QB Chiefs

Injury: Sprained Ankle

Timetable For Recovery: *Taken Off Injury Report

Potential Replacement: Matt Moore

Comments: Mahomes has practiced in full which puts him on track to play in Week 2. There was never too much that he would miss time, but getting confirmation that he's doing just fine is always good as well.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR Steelers

Injury: Sprained Toe

Timetable For Recovery: *Taken Off Injury Report

Potential Replacment: Donte Moncrief, James Washington

Comments: Smith-Schuster practiced in full on Thursday which means barring ant setbacks he should be ready to go for this week. Toe injuries can be tricky as constantly pushing off the foot violently to sprint but also change direction can make the toes vulnerable so just keep an eye out as we get closer to Sunday.

Le"Veon Bell, RB Jets

Injury: Strained Shoulder

Timetable For Recovery: Questionable For Week 2

Potential Replacment:Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell

Comments: Bell popped up on the injury report earlier in the week and has not practiced due to nursing a sore shoulder. He had an MRI today which revealed no structural damage so he's going to try and play through the discomfort. The Jets are without Sam Darnold so Bell will likely be relied on heavily as long as his shoulder can handle it.

Nick Foles, QB Jaguars

Injury: Broken Collarbone (Non-throwing Shoulder)

Timetable For Recovery: Put on IR, not eligible to return till Week 10

Potential Replacement: Gardner Minshew

Comments: This is the worst possible way for the Jaguars start to the season. Foles suffered a broken collarbone and was ruled out of the game. Foles had surgery on his collarbone to allow the bone to heal but also to accelerate the healing process so that when he does return he should be as close to 100%. The fact that it is his non-throwing shoulder is what should allow him to slide back into the starting role unless somehow Minshew absolutely blows the Jaguars away which I'm not going to count on.

Baker Mayfield, QB Browns

Injury: Sprained Wrist

Timetable For Recovery: *Not On Injury Report, Expected To Play

Potential Replacement: Drew Stanton

Comments: Mayfield has been able to practice without a protective sleeve on his wrist which is a good indication that his wrist pain is improving. With the Browns playing on Monday night, he'll have one extra day to rest up and feel better.

Joe Mixon, RB Bengals

Injury: Sprained Ankle

Timetable For Recovery: Questionable For Week 2, Game Time Decision

Potential Replacement: Giovani Bernard, Trayveon Williams

Comments: Mixon was able to practice in limited fashion on Friday which is encouraging considering he didn't practice all well. He'll need to test his ankle and see how he feels and with the Bengals playing in the early slate we'll find out sooner than later.

Tevin Coleman, RB 49ers

Injury: Sprained Ankle

Timetable For Recovery: 3-5 Weeks

Potential Replacement: Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert

Comments: Coleman suffered the ankle injury in the first half of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers and did not return. Coach Shanahan stated after the game that he is concerned with Coleman's ankle and that concern was confirmed with an MRI showing Coleman suffered a high ankle sprain.

Devin Funchess, WR Colts

Injury: Broken Collarbone

Timetable For Recovery: Put on IR, not eligible to return till Week 10

Potential Replacement: Deon Cain, Parris Campbell

Comments: Funchess immediately came off the field in pain after falling going for the ball in the endzone and was diagnosed with a broken collarbone. He, like Nick Foles, had surgery on his collarbone to kickstart the healing process and get him recovering as fast as possible. It's hard to say what Funchess' role will be if and when he does return, but we'll see how he progresses throughout the upcoming weeks.

Mike Williams, WR Chargers

Injury: Sprained Knee

Timetable For Recovery: Questionable For Week 2, Game Time Decision

Potential Replacement: Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman

Comments: Williams was able to get in a limited practice on Friday which gives a glimmer of hope that he could potentially suit up on Sunday. However, he'll need to go through warm-ups and his knee will have to be good for the medical staff to give him clearance.

Derrius Guice, RB Redskins

Injury: Knee Surgery For Meniscus Tear

Timetable For Recovery: Place On IR

Potential Replacment:
Adrian Peterson,

Comments: Guice underwent surgery for his knee to help improve his discomfort and also allow the tissue the ability to heal. Adrian Peterson will replace him on the active roster but the Redskins aren't closing the door on Guice possibly returning at some point later on this season. Tough blow for fantasy owners that took a shot on him.

Trey Burton, TE Bears

Injury: Strained Groin

Timetable: Questionable For Week 2, Game Time Decision

Potential Replacement: Adam Shaheen

Comments: Burton continues to work his way back from a groin strain during pre-season and althoug there's optimism that he'll be available Week 2, he likely won't play the normal amount of snaps in his first game back. Expect the Bears to ramp up his workload if he does play and doesn't suffer any setbacks.

Mark Andrews, TE Ravens

Injury: Sprained Foot

Timetable: Questionable For Week 2, Game Time Decision

Potential Replacement: Hayden Hurst, Nick Boyle

Comments: Andrews had been added to the injury report on Friday, but according to Adam Schefter he is expected to play. Not sure what the situation is here as there haven't been a ton of infomation put on his his foot issue, but the Ravens play early so we'll know whether or not he'll be out there.
