Pittsburgh Steelers Update

The Steelers held their collective breaths Monday after the news of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s motorcycle accident reached team headquarters.

Roethlisberger, the team’s third-year quarterback, suffered a broken jaw and nose, and lacerations on his head and knees when the motorcycle he was driving collided with an oncoming vehicle that was making a left turn across his lane near downtown Pittsburgh Monday.

Team sources say there appear to be no other injuries to Roethlisberger at this time and the Steelers are hopeful he’ll be ready to return to action sometime in training camp, which begins July 28.

Roethlisberger was the star of the team’s offseason workouts, zipping balls all over the field as he looked completely healed from a 2005 regular season that saw him suffer an injury to his thumb and both knees.

The young QB looked especially sharp throwing the ball to tight end Heath Miller, with whom he is developing a special relationship with.

Miller, the team’s top draft pick in last year’s draft, looks as if he could be the breakout player on the team this season after a rookie season that saw him catch 39 passes for 459 yards and six touchdowns.

With Antwaan Randle El now a member of the Washington Redskins, the Steelers will be looking for a No. 2 receiver to compliment Hines Ward and Miller is the most obvious player to take that spot.

Meanwhile, barring the unforeseen, the Steelers will open training camp with Charlie Batch running with the first team while Roethlisberger recovers, with young quarterbacks Omar Jacobs, Rod Rutherford and Shayne Boyd fighting for the third spot behind Batch and Roethlisberger.
