DETROIT LIONS POST DRAFT ANALYSIS
by D.J. Boyer
as of Tuesday May 2, 2006

Detroit Lions

1(9) Ernie Sims LB	Florida State
2(40) Daniel Bullocks S	Nebraska
3(74) Brian Calhoun RB	Wisconsin
5(141) Jon Scott OT	Texas
6(179) Alton McCann CB	West Virginia
7(217) Fred Matua OG	USC
7(247) Anthony Cannon LB	Tulane

Day One Analysis: Ernie Sims has as much talent as any linebacker in this draft
with a last name other than “Hawk” but there are some concerns that go with
taking him in the first round. Sims has suffered 5 concussions at the NCAA level
and usually these problems follow you throughout your career. The Lions do need
a playmaker at outside linebacker so they did address a need (and it wasn’t a
wide receiver). The Lions get a good grade from me because their picks in the
2nd and 3rd round made sense and were both great values. Sims has the most
talent of anyone drafted during the Lions first day but Bullocks can make as
much of a splash if not more with the defense.

Day Two Analysis: I like the offensive line selections with Scott and Matua.
Cannon and McCann were major reaches and dropped their overall grade a bit.
Still a productive draft for the Lions.

Fantasy Impact: Bullocks and Sims are both good picks in IDP leagues and
will rack up tackles. Calhoun adds depth to the backfield but I don’t expect
much production from him yet.

Overall Grade: B-
