FANTASY UPSIDE
Gus Frerotte will be the No. 1 backup for Marc Bulger in St. Louis. Bulger missed eight games last season and has missed 11 in the past three seasons. I expect to see Frerotte start at least a couple games this year in ’06. With the Dolphins last year he played in all 16 games (15 starts) and threw for nearly 3,000 yards, with a career-high 18 TDs. Frerotte has no problem filling in for the starting QB - in ’03 he did a nice job in relief of Daunte Culpepper in Minnesota and also played some impressive games with Denver in ’00. He also should have no problem with the offense, as new St. Louis’ coach Scott Linehan was the offensive coordinator with both the Vikings and Dolphins, where Frerotte played the past three seasons.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Even if Bulger goes down, you’ll never see big numbers out of Frerotte. His 18 TDs last season were a career-high and he hadn’t thrown more than 10 since ‘97. Be leery of his INT total too, as he threw 13 last season and has thrown 20 INTs in his last 20 starts. Only once last year did he throw for more than 300 yards and he completed just 52 percent of his passes. Don’t expect Gus to rush for any TDs either, as he hasn’t done that since ’01. He’ll be 35 years old when the season starts and his mobility, which has never been an attribute, will continue to diminish. Last season he was sacked 26 times.
MY BOTTOM LINE
The well-traveled Frerotte is with his seventh team in the past nine seasons. While the Rams are no longer “The Greatest Show on Turf” they still possess some great WRs. And, even though Frerotte will be wearing a headset on most plays, he should see some action at some point during the season. In most leagues, Frerotte will not get drafted. Still, as far as backup NFL QBs go, he’s definitely a top-five, so only draft him in the very late rounds if you have Bulger or are in a league that is thin on QBs; otherwise wait to pick him up if Bulger gets injured.

FANTASY UPSIDE
The upside for Frerotte is he always seems to be on the field no matter what team he is playing for. Frerotte was the starter in Miami last season and threw for nearly 3,000 yards and set a career high with 18 touchdown passes. Frerotte now comes to St. Luis, a team quarterbacked by Marc Bulger. Bulger played in only 8 games last season and has missed games in each of the last two campaigns with shoulder injuries. If Bulger goes down again Frerotte will be ready to go and is familiar with the offense. New Head Coach Scott Linehan served as the offensive coordinator in Minnesota and Miami previous to landing the Head Coaching job for the Rams. Frerotte played for Linehan in both places and threw 25 Touchdowns to only 15 interceptions over that time frame.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
From a fantasy standpoint, the most obvious downside to Frerotte playing in St. Louis is he won’t be the starter. He’s clearly behind Marc Bulger on the depth chart. Further, Frerotte has never been viewed as a franchise quarterback or a long-term solution. He is entering his 12th season in the NFL and the Rams are the 7th team he has played for. In four of his previous eleven seasons at quarterback, Frerotte has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns and he takes a lot of sacks.
MY BOTTOM LINE
In large leagues, if you have the opportunity to draft a quarterback late, Frerotte may be worth a reach. The Rams throw the ball often and Frerotte has a great cast of receivers to work with in Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and emerging star Kevin Curtis. Plus, Frerotte knows he has the vote of confidence from the coaching staff. Scott Linehan is personally responsible for having him sign in Miami and St. Louis in each of the last two seasons. Key Take? Pay attention to the 4for4.com in-season injury reports. If Bulger starts getting dinged, you might want to pick Frerotte up ahead of the curve. If Bulger goes down for a long period of time, Frerotte should be able to put up decent Fantasy numbers.
