MARC BULGER QB - Rams

FANTASY UPSIDE
Bulger has proven he can pass for a ton of yardage in the NFL. The new Rams offense will continue with some trick plays and plenty of no-huddle offense. At this stage, nobody can question Bulger’s quick release and throwing accuracy.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Coach Linehan has been rushed along as an NFL Head Coach. He’s going to have a ton of pressure on him. He’s going to force plays looking to make up ground and Bulger’s arm isn’t very good going deep. Further, the Rams new offense will certainly run the ball more than what we saw last year. That will hurt Bulger’s passing numbers. On top of that, the team has huge question marks at TE, with rookies at the positions. They’re going to have problems protecting Bulger and they have a ton to learn as receivers as well. Plus, Bulger is frail and doesn’t have the type of body to handle many big hits. Finally, I’m always concerned about weak-armed QBs coming off shoulder problems.
MY BOTTOM LINE
Don’t overpay for Bulger on draft day. Let someone else live in the past and think the Rams Greatest Show on Turf is still going. Bulger isn’t durable and he’s not worth his ADP. I’d much rather grab a solid #2 WR than risk a pick on Bulger in the 5th or 6th round.

FANTASY UPSIDE
Marc Bulger is coming off of a season in which he only played in half of his team’s games. But, before injuring his shoulder, he was having a good year statistically averaging 287 yards per game and throwing 14 TD tosses. He had pretty good seasons in ’03 and ’04 as well, passing for nearly 4,000 yards in each, including 43 total TDs. Bulger has been a very accurate passer in his career, completing a career-best 67% last year and 65% for his career. He has big-game potential, including four 300+ yard games last season. Bulger has some of the best WRs in the game to throw to in Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald. He is in the prime of his career at age 29, and the Rams have confidence in him. Despite all his injuries, they did not draft a QB.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Not only was he out eight games in ‘05, Bulger also missed two games in ‘04. He has thrown 45 INTs in his past 37 games, and, he is also not the most mobile QB, being sacked 26 times last year and 104 the last three. With the change in head coach to Scott Linehan and more emphasis on the running game with Steven Jackson, don’t expect Bulger’s numbers to be where they were on pace for last season. Also, one of his top targets (I. Bruce) is getting older.
MY BOTTOM LINE
The Rams play in what is anticipated to be a tough division with the Seahawks, Saints and emerging Cardinals. There’s a good chance they’ll be playing from behind in a lot of games, which means Bulger has an opportunity to put up some good numbers. While he’s not thought of as an elite QB, he has the potential to put up yardage and TD numbers similar to the Mannings, Tom Brady and Carson Palmer.

FANTASY UPSIDE
One of the most accurate quarterbacks in the league. If you play in a league where completion percentage earns you bonus points or is a factor in scoring, Marc Bulger is an option you want to consider. He’ll be playing in a quarterback friendly system under Scott Linehan where he has a number of weapons at his disposal. Bulger has one of the most dependable targets in the NFL in Torry Holt. With Isaac Bruce, Kevin Curtis, Shaun McDonald and a pair of young tight ends in rookies Joe Klopfenstein and Dominique Byrd, Bulger has options all over the football field.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Bulger is coming off a shoulder injury that limited him to only 8 games in 2005. Although Bulger has a clean bill of health right now, shoulder problems in quarterbacks have a nasty habit of coming back. In addition, there are questions about how effective the running game will be. St. Louis has future star Steven Jackson running the football but the Rams have to show more of a commitment to the run than they did a season ago under Mike Martz. Bulger has all the tools of a great quarterback but his effectiveness is limited without an effective running game. More carries and success for Jackson will ensure the same for Marc Bulger and the passing game.
MY BOTTOM LINE
There are too many good receivers on this team for him not to find someone open on a consistent basis. Bulger is only 29 years old so you can take him in your Dynasty League and not have to worry about replacing him in a year or two. I believe Bulger is a top 10 overall quarterback in any league format and is probably ranked 50-75 overall depending upon your rules.

Bulger is in a new system and he’s a huge injury risk. Would you really be happy if you drafted Bulger early and he ended up with 2,327 Total Yards and 14 Total Touchdowns like last year? Let someone else be the hero and risk a 5th or 6th round draft pick on him.
