While the names have changed, quarterback Kurt Warner has once again found himself surrounded by skill-position studs. Warner will be leading the charge in Arizona with perhaps more talent around him than he had during his years with St. Louis.
Currently, Warner is ranked 84th overall by 4for4.com and is the 14th best quarterback available. He has an average draft position of around the 11th round in ten-team leagues.
Looking at some of the quarterbacks taken just before Warner, it’s hard to understand how he could slip. Drew Brees, despite being the 17th ranked QB, is getting selected almost two rounds ahead of Warner while being in new surroundings. Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Bledsoe and Aaron Brooks are also being nabbed ahead of Kurt.
If you remember last year, Kerry Collins made a huge leap into some GM’s top-five, and, of course, turned out to be a flop. Warner finds himself in a similar situation this year, but in a better position to succeed. The key to success for the 35-year-old QB will be staying off the ground, thus staying healthy and staying in games. That could be tough behind an offensive line that ranks near the bottom of the league.
While Larry Fitzgerald is getting all of the attention at wide receiver, don’t forget about Anquan Boldin. Boldin is coming off another “career-year” in which he recorded 1,402 yards on 102 receptions. And by the way, he missed the first two games of the season.
Fitzgerald, meanwhile, found himself with similar numbers, playing in all 16 games: 103 catches and 1,409 yards. He had 10 touchdowns compared to Boldin’s 7.
Playing the role of Marshall Faulk for Warner is Edgerrin James, who was signed as a free agent this winter. James is a top-5 fantasy back and is coming off a 1,506 rushing performance in 2005 while tying a career-high with 13 touchdowns. James saw a dip in his receptions and yards with 44 for 337 yards. But, clearly James has shown in the past he can be the versatile weapon out of the backfield Warner once had with Faulk.
MY OVERALL OUTLOOK
While I see taking Bledsoe ahead of, or instead of, Warner, I can’t justify Roethlisberger or Brooks. While Brees could be successful, he’s in a new situation on a team that just needs to take a step forward after the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
If Warner’s ADP holds true, he will most likely be drafted as a backup on your team. However, you may find yourself with your own quarterback controversy after a while with Warner collecting points on your bench.
