Colts Vinatieri could kick full time
June 24, 2010, 9:22am

Indy Football Report - [Full Article]

We said early this week that K Adam Vinatieri's return was a reason for optimism, but Vinatieri also is coming off the most injury-plagued season of his career, having missed 10 games last season with hip and knee injuries.

Vinatieri looked good during organized team activities, and talked of feeling good and playing several more seasons. A more pressing issue for the Colts involving the 15-year veteran is whether he can remain healthy through an entire season.

Considering the Colts seem to very much want him to be the kicking specialist next season, and considering they didn't re-sign veteran Matt Stover – who kicked the last half of the regular season and the post-season – indications are the Colts believe he will be healthy. No reason to believe he can't remain that way, and if that's true, history indicates 37-year-old kickers can be very effective.

Adam Vinatieri Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

While Vinatieri hasn't exactly been the most consistent kicker over the past couple of seasons, the Colts have a high powered offense that should give him plenty of opportunities to score. In a game against the Texans that figures to be a shoot-out, I'd definitely start Vinatieri in all league formats.

Week 17
Adam Vinatieri vs. Buffalo

With the second string offense likely to get most of the playing time, it's unlikely that Vinatieri will find the same amount of success you could expect with Peyton Manning at the helm. I wouldn't start Vinatieri this week unless you're desperate.

Week 16
Adam Vinatieri vs. Jets

Vinatieri is supposed to be back this week, but I don't see him being ultra-productive in a game that matters very little to the Colts. Besides, his time away makes him a risky play anyway. I would look elsewhere this week.

Week 5
Adam Vinatieri vs. Tennessee

Vinatieri was 2 for 2 on field goals last week and added 4 extra points. As long as the Colts remain a scoring machine (and they are that this year) Vinatieri will remain a viable fantasy option. Keep him active this week in all leagues.

Week 4
Adam Vinatieri vs. Seattle

The Seahawks defense has been underwhelming so far this year, so I'd expect the Colts to score a bunch of points again. While Vinatieri's accuracy has been a little suspect as of late, I'd still expect him to get at least a couple of field goal attempts and he might get another four extra points like he did last week. He's a solid option at kicker this week.

Week 3
Adam Vinatieri vs. Arizona

This game doesn't look to be very low scoring and Vinatieri may find himself benefiting from it. Vinatieri hit both attempts (one a 48 yarder) against Miami last week, showing some accuracy that has appeared to be lacking over the last couple of years. This week, he's a great start against a soft defense and as a part of a team with Peyton Manning behind Center.

Week 2
Adam Vinatieri vs. Miami Dolphins

Vinatieri missed his only field goal attempt last week against the Jaguars, but he should still be considered a solid fantasy option as the kicker of a team that's bound to be one of the higher scoring franchises in the NFL this season.
Vinatieri's accuracy has been less than stellar the last two seasons, and we'll see soon enough if he's going to continue his struggles in 2009. Until then, he's worth keeping in your fantasy line-up. Two field goals and two extra points sound about right for this week.

Week 1
Adam Vinatieri vs. Jacksonville

The Jaguars had defensive issues last year, really missing Marcus Stroud. This year it doesn't appear as though they've upgraded that side of the ball much, so I imagine the Colts will find plenty of opportunities to score this week against them. I'm a firm believer in starting kickers on teams that are going to score a lot of points, and the Colts fit that description. Vinatieri should be active in all league formats this week.
