Denver Post - [Full Article]

The last preseason game is part ending — of training camp — and part beginning — of the regular season.

And the Broncos close out the preseason tonight, trying to walk the line between staying healthy and being ready. Unlike Mike Shanahan, who often kept his starters and top backups out of the preseason finale, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels figures to play some of his starters well into the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings.

"Last year we played them a decent chunk in the first quarter," McDaniels said. "We don't put a play limit on them. There are some players that we want to see — if they can play this week. They're going to play and they're going to play more than three or four plays."

McDaniels did not play quarterback Kyle Orton in last year's preseason finale. Former No. 3 quarterback Tom Brandstater threw 30 passes in a 19-0 victory over the Cardinals. Orton missed the game with a finger injury. Then-No. 2 quarterback Chris Simms didn't play because of a sprained ankle, but the bulk of the starters played deep into the first quarter.

McDaniels said he hopes to play all healthy players some, so Orton should get a handful of snaps.

Left tackle Ryan Clady, who has returned to practice after offseason knee surgery, is expected to play at least some snaps against the Vikings, and running back Knowshon Moreno said Tuesday he hopes to play some as well.

Kyle Orton is the new Steve DeBerg. For those who don’t remember DeBerg, he was a decent starting quarterback who kept getting cast aside for “the next big thing.” In San Francisco, he was dealt away so Joe Montana could take over as the starter. In Denver, he was sent packing to make room for John Elway. And in Tampa Bay, DeBerg was made to walk the plank twice as the Buccaneers replaced him with Steve Young and Vinny Testaverde. Orton was dealt to Denver last year in the Jay Cutler trade as Chicago felt Cutler was a franchise quarterback and Orton wasn’t. Now the Broncos have selected Tim Tebow, also known as “The Greatest American Hero” and it’s only a matter of time before Orton is looking for a job in another city. DeBerg finally found his own team to run in 1990 with Kansas City, and led the Chiefs to the playoffs. Maybe Orton will have the same fortune someday. For now, he’s not going to be much of a fantasy quarterback, but like Seneca Wallace, Matt Hasselbeck, and Matt Moore, owners might be able to mine some points out of him if they use him at the right time.

Week 17 - Kyle Orton vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Orton completed 27-41 passes last week in Philly, but for just 189 yards. However, all of those short passes did lead to a season-high three TD tosses. In the previous meeting this season versus the Chiefs, Orton turned the ball over three times, but threw for 180 yards and two TDs. The Chiefs are allowing 219 yards passing per game, but they have been unable to stop their oppositions' running attack. Look for Denver to dominate on the ground, limiting Kyle’s numbers; nevertheless, he should throw for at least one TD, as he’s done the last five weeks.

Week 16 - Kyle Orton vs. Philadelphia Eagles
In the one-point loss last week to the Raiders, Orton threw for 278 yards and a score, but the offense was able to produce just the lone TD and four FGs. It was the most yards Kyle’s thrown for since Week 5 and he’s thrown six TD tosses over the past four weeks. However, he will be facing an Eagles’ D that’s allowing just 214 passing yards-per-game on Sunday, so look for Orton to finish with around 200 yards, but probably not throw for more than one TD.

Week 15 - Kyle Orton vs. Oakland Raiders
Thanks to the record-setting performance by his WR Brandon Marshall last week against the Colts, Kyle put up good numbers, going 29-41 for 277 yards and two TDs. It was the most yards he’s thrown for since Week 5. Earlier this season in Oakland, with Denver dominating on the ground, Orton threw only 23 passes, resulting in 157 yards and one TD. The Raiders have been middle-of-the-pack against the pass, yielding 218 yards-per-game, but look for Denver to again control this one with their running game. Orton may not throw for 200 yards, but should have a TD toss.

Week 14 - Kyle Orton vs. Indianapolis Colts
Despite three turnovers last week in Kansas City, Orton put up decent numbers, going 15-25 for 180 yards and two TDs. In four of the past six games, Kyle has thrown for less than 200 yards, with five TD tosses and six INTs during that stretch. Indy is allowing 224 passing yards-per-game, so look for Orton to throw for around 200 with at least one score on Sunday.

Week 13 - Kyle Orton vs. Kansas City Chiefs
While he still is a bit bothered by a sore ankle, Orton appears to be much better – and should be fine after 10 days between games. He was back on track in the Broncos’ last game, going 18-28 for 245 yards and a TD. While it was his highest yardage total since Week 5, Kyle has only tossed three TDs over the past five games. But, Kansas City is the third worst team in the NFL against the pass, giving up 258 yards-per-game, so look for another steady game from Orton - with around 225-250 yards and at least one TD.

Week 12 - Kyle Orton vs. New York Giants
It’s obvious that Orton’s ankle is still a huge problem, as he was hobbling around the field last Sunday. He didn’t start, but came in for Chris Simms in the second quarter, going 15-29 for 171 yards. Kyle has not thrown a TD in three of the past four games and has failed to throw for 200 yards in three of the past four as well. With only four days between games, the ankle will still be a problem for Orton, so this looks like another week to look elsewhere for your QB, especially since the Giants are second in the NFL versus the pass, allowing only 177 yards-per-game.

Week 11 - Kyle Orton vs. San Diego Chargers
In only a half of action last week against a good Redskins’ D, Orton threw for 193 yards and two deep scores. However, he hurt his ankle right before the break and missed the second half; but he should start on Sunday at home. In Week 6 versus the Chargers, Kyle was 20-29 for 221 yards and two TDs. He also had five rushes for 11 yards. San Diego is allowing just 208 yards-per-game through the air, so, with the bum ankle, expect Denver to try to establish the run. Orton makes for an average play this week, throwing for around 225 yards and one score.

Week 10 - Kyle Orton vs. Washington Redskins
Kyle completed 61 percent of his passes on Monday night (23-38), but threw three of his four INTs on the season against Pittsburgh. This game could be just as frustrating for him, as the Redskins are the best in the NFL versus the pass, allowing just 160 yards-per-game. Look for the Broncos to try to establish their running game this week, with Orton finishing with fewer than 200 yards passing, but his first TD toss since Week 6.

Week 9 - Kyle Orton vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Orton had a tough day in Baltimore last week, throwing for a season-low 152 yards on 37 attempts. It was the first game this season he did not throw a TD and Kyle has averaged just 190 yards passing the last two contests. Things don’t look to get any better this week, as he’ll be going against a Pittsburgh team that’s yielding only 214 passing yards-per-game. Look for, at most, one TD toss from Orton this week.

Week 8 - Kyle Orton vs. Baltimore Ravens
In his last game, against San Diego, Orton had another solid outing, completing 69 percent of his passes for 229 yards and two TDs. On the year he has now thrown nine TDs versus just one meaningless INT. Orton is completing 64 percent of his passes and is averaging 244 yards passing-per-game. This week he’ll be going against a Ravens’ D isn’t what is used to be, as it's allowing 242 yards-per-game through the air. Look for Kyle to throw for over 200 yards and at least one TD in this one.

Week 6 - Kyle Orton vs. San Diego Chargers
Maybe it was the glove Orton was wearing due to a dislocated finger that limited him the first four weeks. Last week against the Patriots (gloveless), he had a huge game, completing a career-high 73 percent of his passes (on 48 attempts) for 330 yards and two TDs. Things will probably be a bit tougher this week, as the Chargers are allowing just 215 passing yards-per-game. Kyle has at least one TD toss in all five games this year, but that streak could end on Monday night.

Week 5 - Kyle Orton vs. New England Patriots
Orton continues to manage the game well for the Broncos, and he still has not turned the ball over. Thanks to another late, long TD pass last week against Dallas, he ended up with pretty good numbers - throwing for 243 yards and two scores. Kyle also completed a season-high 69 percent of his passes in that win. He’s averaging 227 passing yards-per-game, but the Patriots are allowing only 192 yards-per-game through the air. Look for another steady game from Orton this week - with around 225 passing yards and at least one TD.

Week 4 - Kyle Orton vs. Dallas Cowboys
Kyle continues to be consistent, as he’s thrown for one TD with no INTs in all three games. And, he hasn’t been sacked in either of the past two weeks. Orton is averaging 221 yards passing per game and Dallas is allowing 268 yards-per-game via the air. Look for another steady game from the Denver QB this week, with over 200 yards and one TD toss.

Week 3 - Kyle Orton vs. Oakland Raiders
Despite completing just over 50 percent of his passes last week, Orton finished with 263 yards and a TD. He wasn’t sacked and, after a rough preseason, has yet to throw an INT in the regular season. Kyle is averaging 253 yards-per-game so far and the Raiders have yielded an average of 238 passing yards in their first two games. Orton should make for another average fantasy play this week in Oakland, throwing for around 200-225 yards and one TD.

Week 2 - Kyle Orton vs. Cleveland Browns
Thanks to a tipped pass that ended up going for an 87-yard game-winning TD, Orton’s numbers looked pretty good last week – 17-28, 243 yards, one TD and no INTs. Helped by a strong running game last week in Cleveland, Brett Favre threw for only 110 yards on 21 pass attempts. Orton should once again be the Denver QB this week, as he has been practicing with a glove on his throwing hand to protect his cut finger. Look for Kyle to throw for around 225 yards this week with at least one TD pass.

Week 1 - Kyle Orton vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Orton injured his right index finger a couple weeks ago, but thinks he’ll be ready to play in the opener. With Kyle at the helm during the preseason, the Broncos’ offense struggled to move the ball and put points on the board. Even with Knowshon Moreno not at 100 percent, look for Denver to try to establish a running game. Therefore, don’t expect too much from Orton this week – assuming he even plays. The Bengals allowed 205 yards-per-outing through the air last season and that’s about what you should see from the Broncos passing game this week. If you have another QB, you'd be better off playing him over Orton.
