Pack still waiting to see status of running game
August 23, 2010, 11:25am
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel - [Full Article]
Roughly three weeks before the Packers open the regular season, Green Bay Mike McCarthy and his offensive staff probably know about as much about their running attack as they did the day training camp opened.
In two exhibition games, starting running back Ryan Grant has carried the ball eight times, two fewer than the team's three quarterbacks.
Quinn Porter, Brandon Jackson and Kregg Lumpkin all have more carries than Grant, who, to be fair, was very limited in the first game because he suffered a concussion.

FANTASY UPSIDE
In 2009, once again Grant quietly put up a 1,200 yard season. He’ll get the bulk of the carries for Green Bay, who have elected in past years to stick mainly with a one-running back system. That should be the case again this year. Also, Grant hasn’t missed a game in the last two-plus seasons.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Though Grant consistently puts up yards and gets a good amount of carries each game, he’s not a huge threat to score, especially given the Packers potent passing attack. Last year he found the end zone 11 times, but in 2008, he only scored four times (out of 312 carries). Ryan also doesn’t catch many passes out of the backfield, limiting his overall production value when compared to other starting running backs.
MY OVERALL OUTLOOK
Grant won’t shock fantasy owners in 2010. If you draft him, you know what you are getting: about 70+ yards per game and a fair amount of touchdowns. With the way the Packers offense moves, he isn’t expected to be more or less of a factor this season than in past years. He won’t reel off many huge weeks, but carries a big enough load to be a reliable starter on any fantasy team.

Week 17 - Ryan Grant vs. Cardinals
Grant gained 97 yards and scored twice last week against Seattle. However, his backup Brandon Jackson did find the end zone three times, preventing an even bigger day from Grant. As long as Grant is on the field, he should have a big day against Arizona. Although, expect him to get some rest in the second half.

Week 16 - Ryan Grant vs. Seahawks
Despite getting a season-low eight carries against Pittsburgh, Grant was able to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter to save fantasy owners. He has a much better match-up Sunday when the Packers take on Seattle. Consider Grant a strong RB2 option this week.

Week 15 - Ryan Grant vs. Steelers
Grant had a huge game against the Bears, rushing for 137 yards and scoring twice. It was the first time in three games that Grant topped the century mark and recorded a touchdown. Things will get a little tougher for Grant this week against Pittsburgh, although the Steelers defense isn't as formidable as it once was. Consider Grant a strong RB2 this week.

Week 14 - Ryan Grant vs. Bears
As expected, Grant struggled against a tough Ravens rush defense, gaining just 41 yards on 18 carries. Luckily for Grant owners, things should get a lot easier for him this week against the struggling Bears defense. Grant makes a strong start as a RB2 this week.

Week 13 - Ryan Grant vs. Ravens
Grant was a bit of a dissapointment last week, gaining just 61 yards on 20 carries against the Lions. Overall, Grant had 103 yards from scrimmage but he didn't find the end zone. The Ravens have a strong run defense but still consider Grant a RB2 or RB3 option this week, as he will continue to get a majority of the carries, especially near the goal line.

Week 12 - Ryan Grant vs. Lions
Grant had a big game against the 49ers, running for 129 yards and a touchdown. Grant has now found the end zone in two of his last three games.
Grant's hot streak should continue this week against a dreadful Lions rush defense. Grant is a great option as either a RB1 or RB2 for his Turkey Day match-up with Detroit.

Week 11 - Ryan Grant vs. 49ers
Grant gained 79 yards against the Cowboys but he was held out of the end zone. He faces a 49ers defense that is solid against the run and is coming off a game where they shut down the Bears Matt Forte. However, still consider Grant a solid RB2 option for this week.

Week 10 - Ryan Grant vs, Cowboys
Grant ran for 96 yards on 21 carries against the Bucs and has now topped 90 yards in three of his last four games. Grant has a tough match-up against a solid Dallas run defense this week but he should still produce enough to warrant being used as a RB2 or flex player.

Week 9 - Ryan Grant vs, Bucs
Grant had a disappointing showing last week, gaining just 30 yards on 10 carries. Look for him to bounce back Sunday against a woeful Bucs defense, as Grant should be one of the top fantasy backs in Week 9. Consider Grant a RB1 with his favorable match-up this week.

Week 8 - Ryan Grant vs. Vikings
Grant finally broke through and had a huge game, running for a season-high 148 yards and a touchdown against the woeful Browns.
While Grant is coming off a strong outing, he faces a much tougher test in Week 8 when he takes on a Vikings defense that ranks among the NFL's best at stopping the run. Use Grant as a RB2 or flex player this week.

Week 7 - Ryan Grant vs. Browns
Grant had a decent game against the Lions but it wasn't the kind of big performance fantasy owners were hoping for. Taking on an awful Detroit run defense, Grant managed 90 yards on 24 carries.
Grant has yet to really get going this year but he'll get another chance this week versus a terrible Browns run defense. Grant hasn't been consistent enough to be considered a top fantasy back yet but you should feel confident about using him as a RB2 this week.

Week 6 - Ryan Grant vs. Lions
Grant has yet to top the century mark in rushing this season but this could be the week that comes to an end.
The Lions have one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL, so Grant has a very favorable match-up this week. While he hasn't rushed for over 100 yards yet this year, Grant has topped 100 total yards the last two weeks.
Grant has gotten off to a slow star this year but expect that to turn around Sunday. Grant is a strong RB2 option but can even be pushed up to a RB1 this week because of the Lions awful run defense.

Week 4 - Ryan Grant vs. Vikings
Grant just missed topping the century mark last week against the Rams, gaining 99 yards on 26 carries. Grant has been solid so far this season but he has a tough match-up Monday night against a Vikings defense that has yet to allow a rushing touchdown in 2009.
In two games last season versus the Vikings, Grant ran for 75 and 92 yards but Minnesota's run defense may be even better this year. Grant should still be in your starting lineup as a RB2 but he may not have a huge fantasy week unless he is able to find the end zone.

Week 3 - Ryan Grant vs. Rams
Grant hasn't recorded a ton of yards this season but he has scored in each of the Packers first two games. Except for giving up one long gainer to Seattle's Julius Jones in Week 1, the Rams have been solid against the run this year. Their problem has been defending the pass.
Grant may not have a huge game against St. Louis but he should still be used as a RB2 this week. Green Bay is expected to put up some points on Sunday and Grant could find the end zone once again.

Week 2 - Ryan Grant vs. Bengals
Grant had a decent game in Week 1 against the Bears in a contest that turned out to be a defensive struggle. Grant rushed 16 times for 61 yards and a score. Considering the performances of some of fantasy football's top runners last week, those are pretty good numbers out of your No. 2 back.
Grant should have an easier time of it this week versus the Bengals. Cincinnati held the Broncos to just 75 yards rushing last Sunday but the Packers present a much tougher challenge with a more balanced offensive attack. Grant is a solid start as a RB2 in all leagues this week.

The Packers may opt to attack the Bears through the air on Sunday but Grant is still a solid option as a RB No. 2 in most scoring formats. The last time Grant faced Chicago's defense he rumbled for 145 yards and a touchdown. Feel confident to put Grant in your starting lineup this week.
