Seattle Times - [Full Article]
Deon Butler caught 15 passes last season, not quite the return Seattle was hoping for when it traded up in the draft order to acquire him -- giving up a 2010 third-round pick.
And with the regime change in Seattle, there was some question where he fit in the future. After all, he's a 5-foot-10 receiver with straightaway speed. It didn't help that when coach Pete Carroll was asked about Butler over the course of the three-day draft, his answer indicated he thought the question was about Deion Branch.
Well, Carroll cleared that up. Toward the end of the offseason workouts, Carroll said Butler made more progress than any receiver, and on Monday he showed that. Butler beat the defense over the top twice during the 11-on-11 team portion of the evening practice, catching what would have been touchdown passes from Matt Hasselbeck on both occasions.

FANTASY UPSIDE
When healthy, Branch has been an effective receiver. He will be in the mix for a starting job.
FANTASY DOWNSIDE
Branch has not played a full season since he arrived in Seattle in four years ago. He had his third knee surgery this past off-season and his career highs with the Seahawks were during his first season in Seattle. His numbers have come down every year.
BOTTOM LINE
Although Branch is fighting for a starting job, he might end up off the roster all together. Golden Tate and Deon Butler are younger with brighter futures than Branch. The new coaching staff will have to see plenty from the veteran to get on the field and stay on the team. Oh, and he has to stay healthy, too. Odds are against him right now so until he is named a starter in Seattle, stay away from him.

Week 17 – Deion Branch vs. Tennessee Titans
Last week against the Packers, Branch was targeted a team-high nine times, resulting in five catches for 53 yards. He has 14 grabs over the past three games, but for just 114 total yards. Deion hasn’t scored since Week 13, but he’ll be facing a Tennessee D that’s allowing 265 yards-per-game through the air. Look for Branch to be over 50 yards again in this one.

Week 16 – Deion Branch vs. Green Bay Packers
Deion was targeted a team-high nine times last week against Tampa Bay, but finished with only four grabs for 28 yards – with his longest reception going for just eight yards. Deion should continue to see plenty of action with Nate Burleson out, but the Seattle offense just isn’t moving the ball well enough to depend on him for a fantasy start.

Week 15 – Deion Branch vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Last week in Houston, Branch became a bigger part of the offense with Nate Burleson getting hurt. Deion registered five catches, his most since Week 4, but for just 33 yards. While he most likely will move in to the starting lineup, Branch is still not a strong fantasy play, as the Seattle offense hasn’t been consistent all season and Tampa Bay is allowing just 200 yards passing per game. Look elsewhere for a WR this week.

Week 14 – Deion Branch vs. Houston Texans
Deion caught only one ball last week against San Francisco, but it was for a seven-yard score – his second TD of the season. In the past three games, he has just five grabs for only 41 yards. Branch just hasn’t been consistent enough this season to warrant a fantasy start.

Week 12 – Deion Branch vs. St. Louis Rams
Deion had just one grab for 15 yards last week. He has scored only one TD this season and the most yards Branch has had in a game this season is 50. Keep him on your bench once again.

Week 10 – Deion Branch vs. Arizona Cardinals
For the second straight game Deion caught three passes, but totaled only 25 yards. He has more than three receptions in a game just once and in the first meeting this season against Arizona he had just two catches for nine yards. Even though the Cardinals have allowed a lot of passing yards, keep Deion on your bench this week.

Week 9 – Deion Branch vs. Detroit Lions
Branch turned in a decent game last week against the Cowboys, finishing with three receptions for 36 yards and his first score of the season. He is still the Seahawks’ No. 3 WR, so playing him, even against a bad Detroit defense, is risky.

Week 8 – Deion Branch vs. Dallas Cowboys
The good news: Deion was targeted seven times in Seattle’s last game. The bad news: he caught only two passes for nine yards. Since Dallas has been tough against the run, if the Seahawks are going to move the ball in this one it will be through the air. However, even with all the teams on bye this week, Branch does not make for a good play. He has just 12 receptions for 94 yards on the season. Only start him if you have no other options.

Week 6 – Deion Branch vs. Arizona Cardinals
Deion was held to just two catches for 23 yards in last Sunday’s romp over the Jaguars. Despite having only 10 receptions on the year, the Cardinals have been pathetic versus the pass, so Branch could make an interesting No. 3 fantasy WR this week. Nate Burleson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh will probably see most of the targets, but Deion may get his first score of the season, as the Seahawks should be calling plenty of pass plays.

Week 5 – Deion Branch vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Deion had his best game of the season last week, hauling in six passes for 49 yards. He is still the No. 3 WR option for the Seahawks, but the Jaguars have been bad against the pass, so Deion could be in line for another good game.

Week 1 – Deion Branch vs. St. Louis Rams
In the one game he played against the Rams last year, Branch caught five passes for 76 yards. Since he’ll be the No. 3 WR heading in to the '09 season, Deion’s numbers will drop off a bit from where they’ve been in the past. In Week 1, Branch should have an average game, finishing with around 30-50 receiving yards.
