While Marion Barber seems entrenched as the starter, Felix Jones could be a few big plays away from closing in. It’s believed he’ll get more work in this game than last game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Scouting Report

Fantasy Upside
The biggest upside for MB3 is the team he plays for. Combined with the tandem of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, Dallas had the league's 2nd ranked offense in 2009 with 399.4 yards per game. They averaged 131.7 yards per game rushing and were 2nd in the NFL with 4.8 yards per carry. Among this three-headed monster, Barber is still the runaway choice to receive all the GL carries.

Fantasy Downside
No matter how you look at it, MB3 has broken down in every phase over the last three years. He has just one 100-yard game over his last 21 outings. Including the playoffs, Barber failed to average over 5.0 yards per carry in 9 of the Cowboys last 10 games of 2009. The low point was totaling 18 yards on 11 playoff carries in two games.

Fantasy Bottom Line
Barber's ADP is 66, 26th among running backs. Barber rushed for 932 yards and 7TDs in 2009 but he's in a freefall. Despite averaging about 219 carries over the last three seasons, MB3 has gone from 16 to 12 to 9 to 7 touchdowns the last four years. He will receive significantly less touches than Felix Jones in 2010 but will again get his share of GL action. He's definitely a low-end No. 3 back this season so don't reach for him.

Week 17
MB3 vs. Philly

Barber has scored in consecutive games and faces a Philly team that he put 70 total yards up on earlier this season. With so much riding on this game, Dallas will come to play and that means Barber will likely see his share of GL carries. He's a low-end No. 1 back this week.

Week 16
MB3 @ Washington

Barber returned to form last week with two touchdowns in New Orleans. Washington was the opponent in one of Barber's rare solid games this season when he posted 107 total yards. Anyone who watched the Redskins pathetic performance Monday night knows they've mailed it in. With that, MB3 looks like a solid scorer this week as a No. 2 back.

Week 15
MB3 @ New Orleans

Barber has been a bust this season. Known as a TD machine throughout his career, he has only four in 2009. He hasn't scored in six weeks and his yards per carry is taking a hit while not sniffing 15 carries for much of the season. All that said; New Orleans is terrible vs. the run, allowing 112 yards per game and 15 touchdowns (6th worst in the NFL). With alot of points expected to be scored, MB3 should be a decent No.2 back this week.

Week 14
MB3 vs. San Diego

Barber, who has been a scoring machine since coming into the league, has not scored since week four. His value as a No. 1 back has plummeted and his 15 carries for 36 yards in New York last week didn't help. However, he's still the goal-line back for one of the league's best offenses so you have to roll with him, even as a No. 2 back.

Week 13
MB3 at NYG

Barber is starting to get more and more doubters throughout this down season but he's facing a common opponent this week. MB3's best game was in Week 2 vs. the Giants as he rolled up 124 yards rushing, 31 yards receiving, and one TD as the Cowboys ran all over the Giants defense. He's a solid contender to reach the end zone this week and a nice No. 2 back.

Week 12
MB3 vs. Oakland

Barber had his best game since week 2 with 99 yards rushing vs. the Skins last week. After weeks of ignoring the run, Dallas has re-focused its efforts on getting Barber and even Felix Jones more touches.

Oakland allows 157.7 yards per game (30th in NFL) and a league-worst 16 touchdowns. That's all you need to know about Barber being a high-end No. 1 this week. Expect his long-TD drought to end today.

Week 11
MB3 vs. Washington

The Cowboys have absolutely quit on the running game. Thru just three games, Dallas was averaging almost 200 yards per game as the league’s top rushing team. But over the last six games, they have averaged less than 100 yards per game and have fallen to 8th in the NFL (130.8 per game).

Barber has suffered and received a pathetic five carries last week. Consequently, his fantasy value has taken a strong hit since he’s not even a lock to reach 50 yards per game. The Redskins aren’t great vs. the run with 125.7 yards allowed per game but with the heat on Jason Garrett this week, I’d be shocked to see less than 25-30 carries from the Cowboys as a team this week. With that info, give him a shot this week as a low-end No. 2 back.

Week 10
MB3 @ Green Bay

Barber may not have scored but his 70 total yards were his most since Week 2 vs. the Giants. A two-yard TD was vultured by Tashard Choice in the wildcard formation.

You still have to be intrigued by how MB3 finished the game with several tough runs to run out the clock for Dallas.

All that said, however, the Pack has a top-10 run defense and has allowed only three rushing TDs on the season.

I still think you have to consider Barber as a low-end No. 2 back or flex option this week simply because the Dallas offense will move the ball. You won't see many two-yard TD runs taken by someone other than Barber.

Week 9
Barber @ Philly

I get the feeling Barber won't see 15 carries in a game the rest of the season.........but he's still the goal-line carrier for one of the league's better offenses.

Philly has a terrific run defense, allowing just 103.1 yards per game and four TDs on the season. Barber is not the best option but Dallas will move the ball. MB3 is always worth a spot in your lineup and is a low-end No.2 this week.

Week 8
MB3 vs. Seattle

The one thing you can say about Barber is that he just doesn't look right. Whether its the broken thumb or tender thigh, he isn't running with the same power that he normally does and has recorded 68 or fewer yards in each of his last three games with only one touchdown. That's not numbers you expect from a No. 1 back.

Seattle gives up just under 100 yards per game on the season and Dallas is the league's fourth best rushing team with 153.3 yards per game. Despite the slump for MB3, he's the No. 1 back for a team that is scoring very well right now. Keep him in your lineup in hopes of a goal-line carry or two but he's no longer a No. 1 back.

Hi soxfan,

We are only projecting 1 catch for Barber. He has only caught 4 balls all season. What puts Barber ahead of Choice (in addition to being the #1 back) is that Barber *should* get the majority of the goal line/red zone touches. If indeed healthy, Felix Jones should be the main PPR threat out of the Cowboys backfield. However, it's unclear what his role will be this week coming off the injury.

Week 7
MB3 vs. Atlanta

Although it took Barber a little while to get over the thigh injury, he's had no issues practicing this week even with a fractured left thumb (hasn't bothered him yet).

Atlanta isn't great in run defense (118.2), ranked 23rd in the NFL and faces a Cowboys team averaging 161 rushing yards per game. This is a terrific matchup for the Cowboys, who average a league-best 5.9 yards per carry. Expect Barber to perform like a decent No. 1 back this week.

Week 5
MB3 @ KC

Barber has practiced all week after his thigh tightened up on him after halftime last week. He still had 68 total yards and a TD in the loss at Denver but has a better matchup this week.

KC has given up at least 75 total yards to Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, LeSean McCoy, and Brandon Jacobs this season with McGahee and McCoy each finding the endzone.

Barber is a solid No. 1 RB option this week and like the other three games he's played in this season; expect him to score.

Week 4 - MB3 @ Denver

Barber was rolling the first two games (234 total yards-2TD) prior to the thigh injury that forced him out of last week's contest vs. Carolina. He's expected back this week though.

Denver allowed 108 total yards and a TD to Cedric Benson to open the season before shutting down Jamal Lewis (38yds) and Darren McFadden (45yds) the last two weeks.

But they are going against the league's top running game who is blowing opposing D-lines off the ball. Dallas averages 193.7 yards per game on the ground and you'll be OK starting both MB3 and Tashard Choice this week with Felix Jones expected to miss a few games.

Week 3 - MB3 vs. Carolina

Despite his surprise of getting out on the practice field, I don't see the Cowboys leaning on Barber too much this week after the game Felix Jones had last week (96 yards-TD).

Barber should get some rest this week but this is definitely a situation you should follow to see if a change is made leading up to gametime that may announce him as a starter. Either way, Jones is a better option in Week 3.

Week 2 - MB3 vs. NY Giants

MB3 had 79 yards and a TD on 14 carries but surprisingly was held without a catch in Week 1 @ Tampa Bay. For those worried about splitting carries with Felix Jones, Barber was the primary ball carrier.

Barber faces a tougher Giants defense that held Clinton Portis to 62 yards in Week 1. Still, the Cowboys are at home and Barber is the GL back so he's a solid No. 2 back this week.

MB3 @ Tampa Bay

Barber has one of the better matchups for fantasy backs this week against the Bucs, who allowed 118.8 yards per game last season.  Dallas should have no problem moving the ball vs. Tampa and MB3 is a proven goal-line stud so his chances of scoring are almost certain.

The only downside to Barber this week is that an early lead will allow the Cowboys to throw speedy Felix Jones in the lineup.  His “10 touches per game” will be an understatement this week as he should see significant action but Barber remains the man at the goal-line.
