San Diego Union-Tribune - [Full Article]

There has been "speculation" that the St. louis Rams will call the Chargers about obtaining disgruntled receiver Vincent Jackson. This is just speculation rather than a report but the speculation came from an NFL source and the Chargers have acknowledged that "more than Seattle has called."

With Donnie Avery on IR and little depth or experience in the wide receiver corps, no team needs Jackson more than the Rams. A big target like Jackson would speed the development of Sam Bradford. In the wide open NFC West, the Rams could actually take a big jump with an improved passing attack and V-Jax would help Steven Jackson as one of the league's top run-blocking wideouts.

Week 17 - Donnie Avery vs. San Francisco 49ers

Many felt Avery was a possible fantasy sleeper heading into the 2009 season. He ends the season ranked lower than Brandon Gibson, who wasn't even on the St. Louis roster when the 2009 slate started. In fairness to Avery, he's been done in by bad quarterbacking, but he's going to have to work very hard in 2010 to regain the trust of fantasy owners.

Week 16 - Donnie Avery at Arizona Cardinals

Once considered to be an exciting player on the rise, Donnie has been pretty dull lately as the Rams have been unable to get much of a passing game going. Over the past three games, he's caught nine passes for 76 yards. At this point, Avery can't even be plugged into a flex spot.

Week 15 - Donnie Avery vs. Houston Texans

Avery is no stranger to the Texans, having played in college at the University of Houston. The former Cougar had a promising rookie season in 2008 and has produced some highlights in 2009, but has been held back by bad play at the quarterback position. Since the Rams will be starting either Kyle Boller or Keith Null this week, Avery's probability of success is slim, and fantasy owners need to seek other alternatives.

Week 14 - Donnie Avery at Tennessee Titans

The presence of Kyle Boller under center causes a strong downgrade in Donnie's fantasy value. He wasn't setting the world on fire with Marc Bulger under center, but things were better than they are now. A big game out of Avery this week would be a surprise and owners competing for fantasy titles don't need to jeopardize their season by giving Avery a starting assignment.

Week 13 - Donnie Avery at Chicago Bears

In his past three games, Avery has caught four passes in all of them. He's also scored three touchdowns, including a one-yard reception last Sunday against Seattle. He's not putting up gigantic totals due to the conservative nature of the St. Louis offense and the limitations of Kyle Boller and Marc Bulger, but could be used this weekend as a flex player if you are in trouble as he does lead the Rams in receiving yardage and receiving touchdowns.

Week 12 - Donnie Avery vs. Seattle Seahawks

Avery hauled in four passes for 65 yards last Sunday when the Rams dropped a 21-13 decision to the Cardinals, and now gets to face a Seattle secondary that most recently gave up five touchdown passes to the Vikings. His prospects for success on Sunday would be more encouraging if Kyle Boller wasn't in the lineup. Because of his matchup Avery could be used as a flex player if you really need some help, but don't expect miracles.

Week 11 - Donnie Avery vs. Arizona Cardinals

Avery may not be as good of a dancer as Donny Osmond, but he found a nice rhythm last Sunday against New Orleans, catching four passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. He might have had a shot at a third score, but Marc Bulger's desperation Hail Mary pass for Avery and Danny Amendola at the end of the game went out of the end zone. Avery hasn't shown much in the way of consistency in 2009 and as a result it's hard to recommend starting him against Arizona. If you are in a pinch, he'd be okay, but if he's low on your depth chart don't move him up in the wake of last weekend.

Week 10 - Donnie Avery vs. New Orleans Saints

Before St. Louis had their bye week, Avery was a disappointment in week eight when the Rams ventured to Detroit, catching just one pass for 15 yards. His 2009 season has been a disappointment and it's doubtful he will get much of anything going against the Saints.

Week 8 - Donnie Avery at Detroit Lions

Avery didn't go crazy last weekend against the Colts, but 58 receiving yards weren't bad considering the Rams scored six points. Donnie is liable to perform well in Detroit on Sunday and is certainly worth starting as he has a decent shot at compiling some yards and doing his touchdown dance.

Week 7 - Donnie Avery vs. Indianapolis Colts

Avery has scored touchdowns in two consecutive games, but left last Sunday's contest against Jacksonville due to a hip injury. He's expected to play this Sunday as the Colts visit St. Louis, and he's worthy of a starting assignment as there's a good bet the Rams will fall behind and be forced to throw far more than they want to.

Week 6 - Donnie Avery at Jacksonville Jaguars

Avery finally showed some life last Sunday against Minnesota, catching five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. In the fantasy universe it's hard to count on any member of the Rams except for Steven Jackson, but against Jacksonville's porous pass defense Avery might have some success. Don't go out of your way to start him, but if you need a flex player or someone to fill a void due to bye weeks he's worth a shot.

Week 5 - Donnie Avery vs. Minnesota

The good news for Avery is that he was the leading receiver for the Rams in week four, catching three passes for 47 yards. The bad news is that the Rams were shut out and Kyle Boller performed poorly. St. Louis likely will be playing from behind against the Vikings and that might help Avery catch some passes, but you don't want to go out of your way to designate a spot for him in your lineup unless you are in dire straits.

Week 4 - Donnie Avery at San Francisco

What happened, Donnie? Where did the player who looked like such a big play threat go? He has disappeared much like David Caruso did when he left NYPD Blue. But just as Caruso and his corny lines made a comeback with CSI Miami, maybe the Avery we grew to admire will return as well. With Laurent Robinson shelved for the season, Avery is again the number one receiver in St. Louis. It's still hard to trust Avery in the wake of his awful start, but if you need a flex guy this week he might be worth a look.

Week 3 - Donnie Avery vs. Green Bay

Avery has made more headlines in 2009 for fumbling as opposed to scoring touchdowns, and as a result he's fallen behind Laurent Robinson in the pecking order among St. Louis receivers. At this point, Avery is certainly someone you want to keep on your roster, given that he's talented enough to right the ship, but you don't want him in your lineup right now.

Week 2 - Donnie Avery at Washington

Avery had more receptions than any other St. Louis receiver in week one, catching six passes for 46 yards. The Rams didn't score against the Seahawks and are unlikely to rack up a high point total against the Redskins, so Avery is merely worth considering as a WR3 or flex player in the hope he might be able to burn DeAngelo Hall for a big play.

Week 1 - Donnie Avery vs. Seattle

Avery missed time during the preseason with a stress fracture in his foot, but appears to be healthy heading into week one. Seattle will be without Marcus Trufant, and while the Rams will be running most of the time there's certainly a chance they'll send Donnie deep and hope that Marc Bulger's injured finger won't keep him from getting Avery the ball. He's worth a shot in a somewhat favorable matchup.
