Joseph Addai Sustains Concussion
August 27, 2010, 10:01am

ESPN - [Full Article]

Indianapolis Colts starting running back Joseph Addai sustained a concussion midway through the third quarter of Thursday night's exhibition game with the Green Bay Packers.

"It's nothing," Addai said after the game. "I was fine. I just got a little dizzy, but I was cool."

Addai was hurt making a tackle of Robert Francois after Francois scooped up a fumble by Peyton Manning when the quarterback was hit stepping up in the pocket.

Addai ran down Francois, but came down hard making the tackle at the Colts 2. He described his injury more of just getting the wind knocked out of him.

"I just had to catch my breath. I was fine," Addai said. "If I needed to go back in, I could've, I was straight."

Fantasy Upside
Addai is an outstanding receiver out of the backfield and has scored 35 touchdowns in the past three years. He's also coming off a season in which he had more than 1,100 total yards and 13 touchdowns.

Downside
Injuries continue to be the bugaboo with Addai. Even though he played in 15 games last season, he seems to be constantly nicked up, causing the Colts to limit his carries. He had just three games in 2009 with 20 or more carries and, at least in part, because of that, failed to record a single 100-yard rushing game. There's also second-year pro Donald Brown, a 2009 first-round draft pick, breathing down his neck.

Bottom Line
Addai's ADP is currently at 50, which places him in the fourth or fifth round in most drafts and makes him a low-end No. 2 running back. That's about right for a player who just doesn't seem to have a truly defined role despite being a starting running back in a high-scoring offense. Peyton Manning calls his own plays and sometimes forgets the running game is there. Thanks to the touchdowns he scores, Addai is solid in scoring leagues. And thanks to his receiving skills, he still holds value in PPR leagues. But in yardage leagues, his value isn't what it could be. Still, Addai can provide consistent production at a pretty good draft day price.

Super Bowl
Joseph Addai vs. New Orleans

We aren't looking at very good run defenses this week, so Addai might be the best fantasy back in the Super Bowl. Start him if you can.

Championship Round
Joseph Addai vs. New York Jets

Addai will figure to be a big part of the Colts offense this week, with Manning likely trying to take a more balanced approach against the stingy Jets pass defense. If you have the option to use Adrian Peterson or Shonn Greene, I'd look there. Otherwise, Addai seems like a great start this week and should produce. He's had a nose for the end zone all year and I think he finds it again in this game.

Divisional Round
Joseph Addai vs. Baltimore

Addai has been pretty solid all year, and after light work in the last two regular season games, he should be healthy for his match-up against the Ravens. Addai is a solid start this week, even though he faces a solid Ravens run defense. His versatility and ability to help out in the passing game make him a threat to post a solid stat line against just about any opponent. There are worse options this week than Addai and he's worth a start.

Note: In FFTOC, Addai might be worth waiting a week on. A match-up against the Chargers would be more enticing. However, a match-up against the Jets would be worse than the Ravens. I'd wait a week if you have other FFTOC options such as Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson.

Week 17
Joseph Addai vs. Buffalo

Addai likely will be pulled early from the game against the Bills in an effort to keep him healthy for the playoffs. Fantasy owners shouldn't trust him this week, and should look elsewhere in the last week of the regular season.

Week 16
Joseph Addai vs. Jets

There's no reason to assume that Addai will see a whole lot of work this week against the Jets. While he may start the game, it's unlikely that he'll stay in it very long as the Colts don't have anything left to play for. In Week 16, I wouldn't trust Addai. Look elsewhere if you can.

Week 15
Joseph Addai vs. Jacksonville

You can run against the Jaguars, especially with DT John Henderson ailing, so Addai is a solid start this week. He's found a way to get involved in all aspects of the offense and been a solid RB2 this season. That should continue this week, provided he stays active all game. Should the Colts, who have nothing left to play for, decide to rest their starters, Addai would be a good candidate to catch a breather. Check the inactives before the game, but as long as he starts, he should be a solid 2nd or 3rd back for fantasy owners.

Week 14
Joseph Addai vs. Denver

It's hard to ignore Joseph Addai when he keeps finding the end zone. Addai will face a more difficult challenge this week against a dramatically improved Denver defense, but Addai should still find a way to post a solid stat line. Keep him active as a number two back until he stops producing.

Week 13
Joseph Addai vs. Tennessee

The best way to beat the Titans this season is through the air. However, Addai will continue to get some looks here and there. Last week, he failed to find the end zone, but he still got the bulk of the carries against the Texans. Tennessee allowed five yards per carry to Tim Hightower last week, so you can run on them. Expect 80 or so all-purpose yards and a score from Addai this week.

Week 12
Joseph Addai vs. Houston

Another week another touchdown for Addai, who keeps finding ways to get into the end zone. As long as he keeps producing in such a way, he'll be a solid fantasy option. This game against Houston looks to be a shoot-out, so Addai should have plenty of opportunities to produce. He's a solid RB2 option this week.

Week 11
Joseph Addai vs. Baltimore

Once again, Addai found his way into the end zone, this time twice. This week, he's up against a very good run defense however and will find it difficult to duplicate his performance last week. He's a risky play because of the match-up and fantasy owners should temper their expectations for him, perhaps even looking elsewhere for a safer option.

Week 10
Joseph Addai vs. New England

Addai keeps finding a way to get into the end zone, and as long as he continues to do so, he'll be a viable number two fantasy option. Keep him active against a tough New England defense. Even with Donald Brown's possible return, Addai should get his share of the load.

Week 9
Joseph Addai vs. Houston

Addai threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne last week, but I wouldn't expect that to become a common occurance. Addai's only been averaging about 50 yards per game this season, but he's found a way to get into the end zone in five out of seven games. With Donald Brown potentially returning this week, Addai won't get another 20 carries, but as long as he continues to find the end zone, he's worth a play as your second or third back. Houston's not a bad matchup either, allowing over 113 yards per game on the ground.

Week 8
Joseph Addai vs. 49ers

The 49ers have a pretty solid run defense, but Addai is worth a start this week anyway with rookie Donald Brown injured. Addai will be the workhorse this week, likely only losing change-of-pace carries to second year player Mike Hart. The Colts will pass the ball, but Addai has been showing a nose for the end zone lately and he'll be the primary back this week. I'd say a solid stat line is very possible for him and he should be active this week in fantasy lineups.

Week 7
Joseph Addai vs. St. Louis Rams

Addai isn't getting all the work in Indianapolis, as he's splitting carries with Donald Brown. However, he's still finding a way to get into the end zone so he remains a viable fantasy option. Going up against one of the worst teams in the league in the Rams, Addai's value goes up even further and he's a very good option as your number two back this week.

Week 5
Joseph Addai vs. Tennessee

The Titans are seventh in the league against the run, so most likely the Colts will try to beat them through the air. Addai found the end zone again last week, and managed almost 100 total yards on 12 carries and 7 catches. Donald Brown however had 9 carries of his own. Expect the discrepancy between the two to continue to narrow as this remains a total running back by committee situation.
Addai is worth a flex start as long as he keeps finding the end zone. However, his matchup this week is pretty rough, so if you have a better option, you may want to look there.

Week 4
Joseph Addai vs. Seattle

The Seahawks are giving up almost 140 yards per game on the ground and the Colts will try to take advantage of that this week. Addai has seen his workload diminish however, receiving less than half the carries in last week's thumping of the Cardinals. Addai has proven fairly effective with his opportunities though, so he'll remain a part of the offense.
Addai is a solid flex option this week because of the matchup, but don't be surprised to see rookie Donald Brown slowly become the preferred choice in the Colts rushing attack; causing Addai to fade a little bit as the season progresses.

Week 3
Joseph Addai vs. Arizona

The Cardinals actually did a fairly adequate job of containing Maurice Jones-Drew on the ground last week, but Addai still has a chance to rebound off a disappointing week. Addai only had six carries last week against the Dolphins, but then again the Colts hardly had the ball and he did average 5.3 yards per carry on those six touches.
He'll continue to lose carries to rookie Donald Brown, but I'd expect 60-75 total yards this week with a solid chance at a score. He's an adequate number two back this week.

Week 2
Joseph Addai vs. Miami Dolphins

Addai showed that he's still the top RB on the Colts depth chart as he carried the ball 17 times against the Jaguars last week. While he did get a touchdown, he only gained 42 yards and he may have a harder time against the Dolphins who contained Michael Turner in Week 1.
Addai is an average second running back this week and a solid flex option for your fantasy squad. The Colts will have to win this week through the air against a staunch Miami run defense.

Week 1
Joseph Addai vs. Jacksonville

Addai has been getting the reps with the first team offense through most of the training camp, however I would still expect rookie Donald Brown to get his fair share of the workload against Jacksonville this weekend. While Addai has the ability to be a dominating fantasy back, it's more likely that he's found himself in a running back by committee with Brown, and that he'll post modest numbers. He does have great hands however, so he'll likely stay on the field in passing situations and he could very well prove to be a valuable fantasy back again. He's worth a start as a low-end number two back or a solid flex option. Still, he's a risk, so if you start him, hope he gets the bulk of the carries.
