Scouting Report

Nobody told Steve Smith last year that the Giants were going to miss Plaxico Burress in their receiving corps. Smith broke out last season with 107 catches for over 1,200 yards. More importantly, he proved to be a reliable route-runner and consistent target for quarterback Eli Manning. In his third season in the league, Smith took everyone by surprise, roughly doubling his previous season output, and scoring seven touchdowns.

Fantasy Upside
Smith has Derrick Mason written all over him. He’s the type of receiver that will likely spend the next 5-10 years grinding out solid statistics year in and year out. He’ll average 1,100-1,200 yards each year, catching 6-8 touchdowns. He’ll make a lot of first downs and be a favorite target for Eli Manning. His route-running ability and his consistent hands make him a valuable part of the Giants offense, and he’ll continue to have a strong hold on his starting job. Also, with 107 catches last season, he’s shown that he can be particularly valuable in points per reception (PPR) leagues.

Fantasy Downside
Smith is one of three talented receivers on the Giants team right now, among Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks. Of the three, he’s also probably the one with the least amount of upside. Nicks has that “it” factor that could lead to him breaking out this season as the top receiver in New York, while Manningham seems to have more explosiveness than Smith as well. While Smith will undoubtedly remain a big part of the Giants offense, his potential is limited, likely capping at his 2009 production.

Bottom Line
Smith is a fantastic number two fantasy receiver and a borderline number one, as he’s likely to repeat his performance from a year ago. He’s the kind of blue-collar fantasy player that helps you win championships. After you’ve locked up some star players in the first few rounds of your draft, round out your team with a guy like Smith. While Hakeem Nicks probably has more upside, Smith should have no problems putting up another 1,200 yards and 7 or so touchdowns.
