Matt Ryan said he spent his offseason trying to add some bulk.
“Heading into each offseason, I try and take two or three areas to really improve on,’’ Ryan said. "This year, it was getting a little bit stronger in the weight rooms. So I’ve been working out pretty hard this offseason to try and put on a little bit of weight to get a little bit stronger and I think that’ll help me out on the field. Also, I think we need to be more effective with some of our throws down the field and that’s something that I’ve certainly worked on early this offseason. And I think a combination of those two things will help our success.’’

Wild Card Weekend: Falcons @ Giants
Ryan will face one of the weakest pass defenses when the Falcons travel to the Meadowlands to face the New York Giants. On the flip side, the Giants' boast one of the most potentially dominating defensive lines which will look to put Ryan on his back throughout the game. New York allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to QBs during the regular season. New York's top corner, Corey Webster is banged up and this team is going to be seriously challenged to cover a healthy Roddy White and Julio Jones.

Week 17 opponent: vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 29th in the NFL (23.3 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
How bad are the Bucs? Well bad enough that even if Ryan only plays the first half that he'll probably still score decent points. Coach Mike Smith told reporters he won't rest starters which sounds nice until the Falcons jump out to a huge lead against a really bad defense. Stick with Ryan here, the matchup is too good to pass up.

Week 15 opponent: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 6th in the NFL (17.1 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
The Jags pass defense has been great and bad in their last few contests. In Week 13, Philip Rivers completed 22 of 28 passes for 294 yards and three scores. The very next game, they limited Josh Freeman to 181 passing yards and two picks. Ryan is coming off his best game of the 2011 season but this isn't Carolina he's facing next. Stick with Ryan in your lineup but keep in mind this is a much more difficult matchup for the Falcons passing attack.

Week 14 opponent: at Carolina Panthers
Carolina's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 16th in the NFL (20 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
The last time Ryan played Carolina, he had an okay which was aided when he scored a rushing TD. He only passed for 163 yards and a TD. Atlanta instead relied on Michael Turner to carry the load as he rushed for 139 yards and 2 TDs. Since the Panthers are so vulnerable against the run, look for the Falcons to go back to Turner again which limits the expected production of Ryan. Unless you've got a great backup with a nice matchup, it's best to stick with Ryan and hope he connects via the pass early in the game.

Week 13 opponent: at Houston Texans
Houston's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 4th in the NFL (15.2 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan has taken it to another level in recent weeks. In his last four games, he's thrown nine TDs and passed for 1,204 yards. With that run, he's now Top 10 at his position but he's going to have his hands full against Houston's defense. The Texans have allowed the third fewest pass yards and pass TDs in the NFL. With the recent news that Michael Turner and Julio Jones might not play this weekend could be a big blow to Ryan and the Falcons offense. Monitor the news leading up to game-time and use him at your own risk if Turner and Jones are out.

Week 12 opponent: vs. Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 31st in the NFL (24.2 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
The Vikings defense hasn't forced an interception since Week 5. In the five games since then, they've allowed 13 TDs and over 1,300 passing yards. This is definitely a great week to start Ryan. He's passed for over 300 yards in each of his last two starts. Having Julio Jones back in the starting lineup would be an added bonus as well.

Week 11 opponent: vs. Tennessee Titans
Tennessee's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 13th in the NFL (19.7 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
The Titans held Cam Newton in check last week but the game before, they let Andy Dalton pick them apart with three TD passes. This is what you get from Tennessee, a hot and cold defense. Ryan has three straight 20-plus point games so this isn't the right time to sit him.

Week 10 opponent: vs. New Orleans
New Orleans' fantasy points allowed to QBs: 15th in the NFL (20.1 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
The Saints' defense is playing at its best when it's able to get after the quarterback and force turnovers. They aren't playing at that level this year since they've only forced four INTs, tied for fourth fewest in the game. Ryan had a nice game in Week 8, but has only thrown multiple touchdowns in two games. This should be a very close game, so only use Ryan if he's your best matchup option.

Week 9 opponent: at Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis' fantasy points allowed to QBs: 23rd in the NFL (22.6 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Atlanta certainly playing up to their own expectations and neither is Matt Ryan. Ryan has thrown five TDs in his last five games to go along with five interceptions. He's got a favorable matchup here and it's now or never for Ryan. If he doesn't put up a big game against the vulnerable Colts, then how much can we expect from him going forward? It's time for a breakout game because no team has allowed more TD passes than Indy.

Week 7 opponent: vs. Detroit Lions
Detroit's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 6th fewest in the NFL (16.4 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan owners have to feel disappointment about his performance so far. Since passing for four TDs in Week 1, he's only thrown four more since then. Ryan and his Atlanta Falcons will be hosting the Detroit Lions in what amounts to another tough matchup. Yet again, if you have a QB on your bench with a better matchup, go with him over Ryan this week.

Week 6 opponent: vs. Carolina Panthers
Carolina's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 10th fewest in the NFL (18.1 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan has had an okay year, but that's about it. Atlanta is now 2-3 and not looking as sharp as last season. Julio Jones has been ruled out for this game and this isn't exactly a very favorable matchup. Over his career, Ryan has played much better at home, but last week he didn't look that great. If you've got another option at QB with a better matchup, it's probably best to start them instead.

Week 5 opponent: vs. Green Bay Packers
Green Bay's fantasy points allowed to QBs: Most in the NFL (30.2 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan continues to be one of the more steady performers at his position and the Packers provide the most favorable matchup on paper in the NFL. Green Bay has managed to force opposing QBs into eight interceptions in the last three games, but that hardly offsets the nine touchdowns and nearly 1,500 passing yards they've given up. Teams playing catch-up from behind every week will do that.

Week 4 opponent: at Seattle Seahawks
Seattle's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 7th fewest in the NFL (17.4 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Seattle looks like a tough against opposing QBs, but they've gone up against Alex Smith, Ben Roethlisberger and Kevin Kolb. Not exactly the crème de la crème of fantasy football. Atlanta is off to a very sluggish start after dropping two of the first three games but they've got a very balanced, solid team on offense. Roddy White came alive last week and if I had Ryan, I'd seriously consider rolling the dice with him.

Week 3 opponent: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 11th fewest in the NFL (19.9 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan is currently battling a left knee injury that has him limited in practice the last two days. For those that want to stick with him this week, you're going to have to closely monitor his progress. Ryan has played at Tampa three times in his career. In those games, he has averaged 195 passing yards, 1.3 TDs and 2 INTs. Tampa's defense can be beat, and it was when Matthew Stafford had 27.3 fantasy points against them in Week 1. That said, given his history playing Tampa on the road, Ryan won't likely replicate Stafford's numbers.

Week 2 opponent: vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia's fantasy points allowed to QBs: 2nd fewest in the NFL (9.0 ppg)
Fantasy Outlook
Ryan will have his hands full against this Philly secondary as the Eagles limited Sam Bradford to 188 passing yards with no TDs in Week 1. But, Ryan has only lost two regular season home games in his four-year career. In this potential playoff game preview, Ryan will need to improve upon his opening game numbers as the Falcons' offense faltered out of the gate to start the year. If your backup QB has an easier matchup than Ryan, don't be afraid to sit him this week.

Week 1 opponent: @ Chicago Bears
Chicago's fantasy points allowed to QBs (2010): 8th fewest in NFL
Fantasy Outlook
Matt Ryan sometimes gets lost in the fantasy shuffle, but he was the leader of an excellent team in 2010. The Falcons will definitely be a contender this year and the addition of Julio Jones could potentially change the way we think of Ryan. In this opening game, the matchup isn't that favorable. Only two QBs threw more than one touchdown passes against the Bears last year, Michael Vick and Tom Brady with two apiece. Use Ryan at your own discretion, especially since Atlanta is on the road.
