Cardinals QB job up for grabs
May 18, 2012, 11:05am

Pro Football Talk - [Full Article]

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt says that he’ll pick either Kevin Kolb or John Skelton as his starting quarterback based entirely on who looks better between now and September, and that he’s heading into the competition with no favorite in place.

Whisenhunt told Jim Rome on Rome that he doesn’t know who his starting quarterback will be, and he’s as eager as anyone to see one of his quarterbacks establish himself as the starter.

“That’s the question that’s going to be answered through the workouts this spring and in training camp this summer,” Whisenhunt said. “They’ve both been working hard at it. It’s been good to get out on the field and actually work on techniques and fundamentals with these guys. At times last year they both showed they can do good things. But consistency at that position is something we’ve got to improve on. So hopefully the competition between both of them will sharpen up one of them enough that he’ll be a good starter for us.”

“I think the knee-jerk reaction would be to say that it is Kevin’s job to lose,” Whisenhunt said. “But then you have to look at what John Skelton did last year in winning those games when he was in there. So I think you have to give John a lot of credit for winning those games. I certainly have a lot of respect for Kevin and what he’s done in this league and we made the commitment to bring him in to our football team. So it’s going to start out as even as it possibly can, and we’re going to let the best player take it from there."

Kevin Kolb, Week 15
Kolb has been practicing this week and it appears he will be back in the starting lineup after leaving early last week against San Francisco. Cleveland's pass defense has been solid this season, while the run defense is suspect. The Cardinals will likely try to keep their QB safe by running it plenty.

Kevin Kolb, Week 14
Kolb's final numbers against the Cowboys looked good, but remember that 50-plus yards and his lone touchdown came on a screen pass in overtime. San Francisco's pass defense isn't great, but the 49ers can get after the QB, especially at home. The Cardinals won't be able to run the ball much, but counting on Kolb won't provide much of an answer, either.

Kevin Kolb, Week 13

Kolb is expected to return to the lineup this week for the Cardinals. Dallas could be a nice matchup from a fantasy standpoint to come back against. Remember, this is a defense Matt Moore had success against in Week 12. And the Cards figure to be behind. Then again, Kolb wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire before his injury.

Kevin Kolb, Week 12
Kolb appears to be on track to return to the starting lineup in what could be a good matchup against St. Louis. Then again, given Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt's usual desire to keep his intentions close until game day, who knows. But Kolb did return to take about 40 percent of the first-team reps on Wednesday. If you've got another option, look there.

Kevin Kolb, Week 9
Kolb is looking like a no-go this week, though Ken Whisenhunt does like to play things freely with the injury list. But it appears that Skelton will get the start while Kolb recovers from his foot injury.

Kevin Kolb, Week 8
The Ravens haven't allowed more than 14 points in a home game this season and should be pretty ticked off after laying an egg in Jacksonville. Baltimore has also allowed just four TD passes and Kolb has struggled when forced to move out of the pocket. Look elsewhere.

Kevin Kolb, Week 7
Pittsburgh's pass defense is No. 1 in the league in yards against, though some of that is because of who the Steelers have played. The Cardinals also figure to test Pittsburgh's run defense with Beanie Wells more than having Kolb try to go after the secondary.

Kevin Kolb, Week 5
Kolb has been OK, not great thus far in his first season in Arizona. He's starting to find Larry Fitzgerald regularly, which should help his numbers. Minnesota has done its usual good job of shutting down the run, so Kolb is going to have to throw the ball. He should be a decent start this week, particularly with so many byes.

Kevin Kolb, Week 4
Kolb had his worst performance of the young season last week and said he took a step back. It just so happened to coincide with Beanie Wells sitting the game out. The Giants are banged up in the secondary, as well, which should add up to a good day for Kolb. Look for him to bounce back with a solid game.

Kevin Kolb, Week 3
Kolb is off to a hot start and got Larry Fitzgerald involved in Week 2. Given that Seattle doesn't get after the passer real well, he should have time to throw and Kolb should be a solid start this week against a defense allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 74.5 percent of their passes.

Kevin Kolb, Week 2
Kolb should at least be familiar with the Redskins and what they do defensively, which should help this week. He struggled to get Larry Fitzgerald involved much last week, but did connect with Early Doucet three times for 105 yards and a touchdown. It's a big deal that Kolb continue to establish some secondary receivers. He should have a solid, if unspectacular, game against the Redskins. Remember, the Cardinals traditionally struggle coming to the East Coast.

Kevin Kolb, Week 1
Kolb is coming off a decent preseason in his first year with the Cardinals' passer-friendly offense. He gets a nice, easy start against a Carolina defense that's thin at CB. The Cardinals will likely want to establish their passing offense after it went missing in 2010. Look for a nice day out of Kolb.
