Jaguars OC Bob Bratkowski and HC Mike Mularkey don't think RB Maurice Jones-Drew absence from OTAs will set him back too much once training camp arrives.
"It’s not helping him by not being here, he’ll have a lot of learning to catch up on," Bratkowski said. "But yet, he’s a gifted and talented player and I’m sure he can get caught up. It’s certainly not helping him. Whether it’s hurting him or not, that remains to be seen."
Before I asked about Jones-Drew specifically, Bratkowski noted that the lockout showed coaches some players could be fine without OTAs. While it hurt the rookies, veterans were able to adjust.
Jones-Drew wasn't learning a new offense last season, but he did come into training camp after the lockout in the best shape he's been in as a Jaguar. Then he followed an offseason without offseason programs with an NFL rushing title.
Mularkey said Jones-Drew does have a limited playbook, which the rest of his teammates have, too. At this point, nobody has a full playbook as the coaches are still working on that. Players will get it before training camp.
"Since I haven’t been around him to see how he responds to the terminology and the coaching I don’t know," Mularkey said, when asked if Jones-Drew will be behind. "I’m assuming he’ll be alright. If he knows the basics he’ll at least not come in here stone cold."

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 17
MJD hasn't practiced this week due to an ankle injury, but he didn't do much last week, either, and put up 103 yards and a touchdown against the Titans. MJD had 114 yards and a score the first time around and that kind of yardage seems highly likely again. MJD is our top play at running back and there's no reason to think he shouldn't be just that.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 16
If your league has an MVP award, Jones-Drew is probably on the short list to win it - at least among running backs. He's been incredibly consistent, getting at least 63 rushing yards every week, despite everyone in the stadium knowing he's going to get the ball 20-some times. He had 97 yards and a score in Week 1 against Tennessee and should be right around there again this week.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 15
MJD's hot play has continued, including an amazing four TDs last week, likely winning a lot of fantasy owners their first-round matchup. Atlanta's defense is nothing great and MJD has rushed for 80 or more yards in 12 of 13 games. Let it ride with MJD. He's playing like a beast.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 14
The Bucs rank 31st in the league in terms of fantasy points given up to opposing running backs. And MJD is Jacksonville's entire offense. You know he's getting his 25 to 30 touches and will find a way to get into the end zone. He's on an incredible run over the past month, just in time for your playoff matchup.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 13
The Chargers have all but given up the ghost, or Norv Turner, in this case. The Jags have already switched gears. The Jacksonville players will be trying out for the new coach, so MJD should benefit. This is what you drafted him for. Ride him into the playoffs against a soft San Diego defense.

Maurice-Jones Drew, Week 12
The Texans held MJD to a season-low 63 yards on the ground in Week 8, though he did score. MJD is going to carry the offense every week and that's going to be tough against a solid Houston defense. He's still a must-start, but it's going to be tough sledding.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 11
Nobody else has really slowed the MJD train this season, despite the fact they know it's coming. Why should Cleveland, who is giving up 143 yards rushing per game, be any different? Heck, he might even score a touchdown this week.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 10
What's not to like about this matchup. The Colts have given up 11 rushing touchdowns and are allowing just under 150 yards per game on the ground. MJD has had big games against them in the past and this should be no different.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 8
MJD had an uncharacteristic three fumbles last week, but logged 30 bruising carries against the Ravens. The big problem will be the Jaguars not falling too far behind, taking MJD's running out of the game. He's given way to Deji Karim more on obvious passing downs to save some wear and tear. But with 159 touches in seven games, you're going to get 20 to 25 touches and 75 to 100 total yards one way or the other.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 7
This looks to be a tough game for Jones-Drew as the Ravens will have no respect for Blaine Gabbert throwing the ball. He's going to get his 20 to 25 touches, but 80 or so total yards might be about all you can expect. That's good, but not great.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 6
The Steelers' run defense has been vulnerable this season, but only in road games. In two home games, they have limited Seattle and Tennessee to less than 100 combined yards on the ground. The game plan will be to make Blaine Gabbert throw the ball, so expect to see a lot of Troy Polamalu in the box. MJD is going to get some yards, but he's going to earn them. Keep the expectations within reach.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 5
MJD has missed some practices this week, but it's more of a case of rest for the heavy workload he's handled. Cincinnati is allowing just 86.8 yards rushing per game and 3.1 yards per carry, but hasn't faced a back of MJD's talent. The Bengals have given up three rushing TDs, so there's hope there. He should be solid, if unspectacular in another heavy workload game.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 4
MJD is off to the best start of his career in terms of rushing yardage, but the touchdowns haven't been there. That's likely to be the case until/if rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert shows an ability to move the team consistently. The Saints have some issues with their run defense, but things could get tough in the red zone, so MJD's lack of TDs could continue.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 3
MJD figures to get a healthy dose of carries as the Jags try to ease Blaine Gabbert into the lineup. Carolina is allowing an average of 4.8 yards per carry. MJD should be a solid start.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 2
MJD got 24 carries last week, but wasn't a factor in the passing game. The Jags did give Deji Karim 14 carries as well, but that's because they were protecting a lead and wanted to run the clock. That won't likely happen this week. Look for MJD to get 20 to 25 touches again this week, with several coming in the passing game. That will be key because the running lanes won't be there against the Jets.

Maurice Jones-Drew, Week 1
MJD's knee was healthy enough for him to make an appearance in the preseason finale. He had a 31-carry, 186-yard effort in Tennessee last year and with David Garrard now gone, you can bet he'll be the focus of the offense this week. Things could be tough for MJD with Luke McCown at QB, but he's going to get his touches. Ride him like the Jaguars are going to do.
