Scouting Report

Rams WR Mark Clayton got off to a phenomenal start last year, catching 22 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the first four games of the season. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in week five against the Lions. Clayton, due to be a free agent following the 2010 season, re-signed with the Rams but recently landed on the PUP list due to his ailing knee. He’ll be eligible to play in week eight. Should fantasy owners stash him on their rosters?

2011 Upside
Clayton had uncanny chemistry with Sam Bradford before he went down. The two are kindred spirits in many ways, with both having been born in Oklahoma City and both having played for the University of Oklahoma. And the fact the two connected as much as they did is very impressive given the conservative scheme St. Louis ran last year. Now the Rams will have a more wide-open offense. Clayton will miss the roughest part of the Rams schedule.

2011 Downside
Clayton’s unavailability pretty much overrides everything. And will he be the same player even if he gets relatively healthy? Although there’s no doubt Clayton and Bradford have a strong bond, Bradford has other weapons to rely on now, such as Mike Sims-Walker and Lance Kendricks.

Bottom Line
Clayton shouldn’t be on a roster right now. Depending on how things go with his ongoing recovery and the performance of the Rams, he might be worth adding towards week eight.
