He'll definitely be in competition with Glen Coffee for the right to enter games when Frank Gore needs a breather. The 49ers can scratch "return specialist" off their list of desperate needs.

The 49ers acquired Ted Ginn Jr. from the Dolphins in a trade this morning for a "late-round pick" in this year's draft, reports Jay Glazer of FoxSports. A league source confirmed the trade, pending Ginn passing a physical with the 49ers. The pick is fifth-rounder, No. 145 overall, reports ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Ginn gives the 49ers a return specialist. The 49ers now can still pick up a player who can handle return duties in the draft, but it's not a dire need. Ginn does not figure to supplant Josh Morgan as a starting receiver, but he can work his way onto the field as the No. 3 receiver.

He'll compete with Jason Hill and Brandon Jones . This move clearly puts Jones on the hot seat. Ginn will suit up on game days for his return skills, which means he'll be no worse than the No. 4 receiver on the team.

The 49ers have agreed to trade quarterback Shaun Hill to the Detroit Lions for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011, according to a league source. Hill, who was 10-6 as the 49ers starter, finished the season behind Alex Smith on the depth chart.

The Lions offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, is familiar with Hill having coached him in Minnesota. Linehan also was the Rams head coach in 2008. Hill and the 49ers swept the Rams that season.

The trade -- as all trades are -- is pending a physical for Hill. Carr also has yet to turn in his signed contract, which is

Hill will find himself playing behind Matthew Stafford , who was the Lions' top choice last season. Stafford suffered a shoulder injury late last season, and the Lions will be cautious as far as his workload this spring. That ought to provide more work for Hill, who is familiar with Linehan's offense.

Eagles WR Kevin Curtis said he was willing to take a lesser role next season even though he opened this season as a starter. Curtis missed most of the season as he battled a left-knee injury. "I felt pretty helpless all year," Curtis said. He had arthroscopic surgery in October and played against the San Francisco 49ers in Game 14. He did not dress for the final three games, however, and his future with the team is up in the air.

Quarterback Alex Smith is the 49ers' starter heading into the offseason, coach Mike Singletary said. And that's the way it will probably remain, but he did say the organization would continue to look for ways to get better.

"Alex Smith is the quarterback going forward," Singletary said during his season-ending press conference. "But the thing I want you to understand is we're always trying to get better at that position and constantly evaluating. That does not mean we won't sign another quarterback. It's a very important position and we're always looking at it."
