Chiefs go RB McCluster with 37th overall pick
Friday, April 23, 2010, 6:34pm
The Chiefs drafted RB Dexter McCluster
out of Mississippi with the 5th pick of the 2nd round (37th overall). McCluster is a small back (5-9, 170) with good speed and hands. Expect McCluster to get involved in the return game immediately, but his role on offense is unclear with the Jamaal Charles
and Thomas Jones
both ahead of McCluster on the depth chart. There is some thought that McCluster could be converted into a slot receiver.

Jabar Gaffney
: Unless the Broncos draft Dez Bryant - we'll get to him in a bit - Gaffney looks like Denver's new No. 1 receiver. And, he is a great candidate for a good season. Gaffney blew up in the final two weeks with Eddie Royal
out. In the final week without Royal or Marshall, he had 14 catches for 213 yards against the Chiefs. That explosion was intriguing. He has never been a No. 1 receiver, and the concern has to be that he has never put up numbers that indicate he could be a lead dog. But he has a great chance. He knows the offense and if he plays anything like he did in the final two games, he'll put up good numbers.

Chiefs HC Todd Hailey on the expectations of new running back Thomas Jones
:
“I don't want to set a role for Thomas. Thomas first of all came in and really blew us all away just with his attitude and his commitment and love for the game and desire to keep playing and playing at a high level and to be part of something special. That was something big on his list. He had been a couple of different places where it turned around and he liked that feeling. He wanted to be a part of it here. We're all just really excited to get him on to the team and get him in the building. I know he's excited about getting going. I'm a big believer in letting these guys play and compete and that was a big part of getting Thomas in here was to bring the level of competition to what maybe we didn't have.”
On Jamaal Charles
’ durability:
“In this day and age, it's a concern for everybody regardless of who it is because those guys talk a severe beating. If you don't have another quality back that you feel like if something happens to one or the other, there's a marked dropoff, then you're probably not doing yourself justice. I wouldn't say it's about Jamaal so much as it's about the way of the league right now. You need two quality backs.”

Kent Babb of the KC Star notes that Jamaal Charles
is still "THE running back" in Kansas City, and that the Thomas Jones
signing will help Charles who was "on fumes" by the end of the '09 season.
Babb also speculates that the workload will be split 65-35 in favor of Charles. Regardless, Charles fantasy value takes a hit with the Jones signing.

The Chiefs signed free agent running back Thomas Jones
, who helped the New York Jets reach the AFC Championship Game last season and was the NFL's third-leading rusher.
The team announced the deal Tuesday, but declined to disclose the terms. NFL.com's Steve Wyche learned Tuesday, from a source with knowledge of the situation, that Jones' deal is for two years.
Jones had career highs of 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, a year after being selected for the Pro Bowl following a season in which he ran for 1,312 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The 31-year-old Jones is expected to complement third-year running back Jamaal Charles
, who was Kansas City's MVP last season with 1,120 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

The Redskins made three coaching hires official today - including a new name that hadn't been previously batted around.
Kyle Shanahan's hiring as the Redskins' new offensive coordinator was hardly a secret - especially considering Mike Shanahan spilled the beans at his own introductory news conference two weeks ago - and we told you last week about Matt LaFleur, who was an offensive assistant under Kyle Shanahan in Houston and will serve as the Redskins' quarterbacks coach.
But a name that came from seemingly nowhere was Jon Embree's. He's the Redskins' new tight ends coach. Embree was apparently out of coaching last season and served as the Kansas City Chiefs' tight ends coach from 2006-08, which followed three seasons as an offensive assistant at UCLA.

Mike Holmgren has already seen enough to know he likes running back Jerome Harrison
, who totaled 570 yards (5.0 average) and five touchdowns in the final four games, trailing only Kansas City's Jamaal Charles
' 658 yards in that span.
Harrison finished with a team-high 862 yards (4.4 average) and notched the third-best rushing day in NFL history with 286 yards at Kansas City.
''I love him as a player,'' Holmgren said of Harrison, in his fourth season. ''I thought what he did at the end of the season was remarkable. The teams Cleveland played knew that's kind of how it was going to go and they still got it done; 286 yards: is that what he had in that one game? That's a lot of yards.
''When it gets cold and you can have a good running game and can control the clock, it's nice to have a guy you can give the ball to like that.''
