Lions have big plans for TEs Scheffler and Pettigrew

According to a source close to the situation, the Detroit Lions plan to make tight end Tony Scheffler
a big part of their offense, not only for this season but for many years beyond.
The addition of Scheffler gives the Lions a potent two-tight end attack that will be used to take pressure off receiver Calvin Johnson
. The formation will limit what defenses can do in the middle of the field to shift coverages toward Johnson.
Scheffler will be used as a tight end and as a third receiver -- similar to how the Indianapolis Colts use Dallas Clark
.
If the offense clicks like the coaching staff hopes, the Lions are expected to approach Scheffler during the season about signing a long-term deal to stay in Detroit.

Manning Has Procedure For Pinched Nerve
Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 9:25pm
ESPN.com - [Full Article]
The Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that Manning had surgery in Chicago to fix a pinched nerve, a procedure that is not expected to interrupt Manning's offseason workouts or his availability for next season.
"This condition has existed intermittently for the past four years, but at no time did it interfere with his training, practice or playing regimen," the Colts said. "While it never has affected Peyton's activity on or off the field, the Colts' medical staff, after post-playoff examination, thought it best to resolve the situation now."
The Colts said Manning spent Tuesday night in the hospital and was released Wednesday.
"All medical personnel involved believe the issue has been resolved," the team said. "Peyton fully expects to participate in the Colts' offseason program this spring."

Dwight Freeney watched the Colts' final Super Bowl practice from a golf cart, and it's still uncertain whether he will play in Sunday's Super Bowl.
Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell said Freeney had improved from Friday to Saturday but declined to say whether the star would play against the Saints.
Freeney's ankle was not wrapped and he did not receive treatment during the 40-minute walkthrough.
Star receiver Reggie Wayne
also seemed to ease concerns about his possible absence Sunday, returning to practice one day after aggravating a season-long right knee injury. Wayne left Friday's practice 20 minutes early, and Caldwell sounded confident that Wayne would play Sunday.
Indy's only other starter trying to recover from an injury is cornerback Jerraud Powers. He returned to practice Friday, nearly three weeks after having surgery to repair a fracture in his left foot, and did light work Saturday.

Randall Gay sat out Saints practice for a second straight day Saturday with a cold, but should be ready for the Super Bowl, according to coach Sean Payton.
The Saints concluded their practice work for the weak with a quick walkthrough practice. Gay is one of the team's extra defensive backs and figures to get plenty of snaps against the Colts' pass-heavy attack. He watched practice from the sideline Saturday.
Fourth running back Lynell Hamilton
sat out the walkthrough as well; he hasn't practiced all week and looks unlikely to play.
