The Pittsburgh Steelers reacquired quarterback Byron Leftwich
by dealing a seventh-round draft pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a sign they expect Ben Roethlisberger
to be suspended for the start of the season.
Leftwich backed up Roethlisberger in 2008, when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. He knows offensive coordinator Bruce Arians' system and could be ready to play Sept. 12 when the Steelers open against the Atlanta Falcons.

Reid: Eagles evaluating trade offers

Andy Reid has said Donovan Mcnabb
is his starting quarterback heading into the 2010 season.
But the trade rumors around the team's quarterback situation have persisted. And now Reid says offers are being made for all three of the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterbacks -- McNabb, backup Kevin Kolb
and former Atlanta Falcons starter Michael Vick
.
Reid said Tuesday and again Wednesday that the team is entertaining and evaluating the offers, according to published reports in Philadelphia. He has declined to offer details about the proposals.
"I'm listening [to offers] out there," Reid said Wednesday at the NFC coaches media breakfast, according to Philly.com. "I'm not saying I'm doing anything. But we're keeping our ears open.
"I don't worry about [what other people are saying]. It's an evaluation process right now," he added, according to the Web site. He also said he could see all three quarterbacks remaining with the team.
Reid broached the subject of trade offers on Tuesday.
"This is the truth: Our three quarterbacks are Philadelphia Eagles," Reid said Tuesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "People are entertaining us with offers. Nothing's been done, but we're evaluating all of them. That's the truth. There's not a lot really going on other than entertaining."

Seahawks defensive end Patrick Kerney held a retirement party last week. Apparently, some of those in attendance are amused the media still has no idea.
Kerney, 33, was expected to undergo elbow surgery this offseason. Due $5.15 million in 2010, the Seahawks seemed likely to ask him to take a paycut. It sounds like they won't have to go through the trouble.
Drafted 30th overall by the Falcons in 1999, Kerney played in two Pro Bowls. He was first-team All Pro in 2007 with the Seahawks and recorded 82.5 sacks in his 11-year career.

As long as Donovan Mcnabb
and Kevin Kolb
are in Philly, Michael Vick
won't get a chance to start for the Eagles. But what about St. Louis?
What seemed totally far-fetched last summer, as Vick was about to get out of prison, no longer seems like such a longshot in St. Louis. Because Vick remains under contract with Philadelphia, Rams general manager Billy Devaney can't speak publicly on the topic.
But Devaney has consistently said the team will explore all options to improve the club. He has made it a point in interviews to note that the "four pillars" approach is being softened this offseason. In other words, the Rams are more likely to take a chance on a so-called "character-risk" player than last year at this time.
Devaney worked for the Atlanta Falcons before coming to St. Louis, so he's very familiar with Vick. In fact, Devaney visited Vick in prison while Vick was serving 18 months for running a dogfighting operation.
Reid has been one of the major career influences for Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo. So when Reid talks about how he was impressed with Vick, and the "changes" he made in his life, that will resonate with Spagnuolo.
So it will come as no surprise if Vick's name comes up next week when Devaney, Spagnuolo and executive vice president of football operations Kevin Demoff meet with Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom at the organization's annual postseason summit.

The Cardinals have made a couple of moves to bolster themselves for the playoffs, signing fullback Nehemiah Broughton
and defensive end Jeremy Clark to the roster from the practice squad of the New York Giants. To make room for the players, the Cards released linebacker Pago Togafau and put defensive end Jason Banks on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
Broughton spend the season with the Giants after the Vikings cut him after the preseason. He’s played in six regular-season games since 2005 and serves as a backup in case the neck issues with starter Dan Kreider
persist. Clark was on the practice squad of the Falcons and then the Giants this season and appeared in four games for the Giants in 2008.
The Cards also added defensive end Ryan Kees to the open practice squad spot after Banks was elevated last weekend.
