In this article, I’ll take a look at picking third in a 10-team league.
The top five or six picks are rather strong this season but afterwards the drop-off is steep, especially if you’re a fan of taking a running back with your first pick.
Picking in the top-three is a great spot. Tomlinson and Petersen should be off the board, but you get a choice between Jackson, Westbrook, Addai, Gore and Brady or even Randy Moss.
This draft is based on the FFTOC scoring system and I’ll be using PC Drafter. I’ll be making my selections as I go and sharing insight on whom I passed over, and why I make the pick I decide.
Let’s get going!
Pick 1.3
If you read my other studies you know I’m big on getting my running backs and building around them. And, at #3 I have a great chance to do that. As has been the case in all the mocks I’ve done, Tomlinson and Petersen are off the board first. You can’t really go wrong with Jackson, Westbrook or Addai and that’s the direction I’m going. My pick is Westbrook.
Brian Westbrook, RB
Pick 2.8
When this pick comes back around, it’s always tough to figure on what’s going to be out there, so my philosophy is take the best available talent. ADP tells me Terrell Owens is the guy to pick and PC Drafter Gold also likes Fitzgerald. I like either of those WRs over the likes of Reggie Bush, Jamal Lewis or Brandon Jacobs. You can’t go wrong with either Fitzgerald or Owens and I actually prefer Fitz. Since the decision was close, I’ll go TO due to bye weeks and my hope is one of those three running backs slip back to me.

Pick 3.1
At this pick, some real nice receivers are still on the board: Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, TJ Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson. And, all of the running backs I mentioned above are still there, too. Since I love my backs, I’m going that direction to make sure I have two good starters.

Pick 4.8
With two backs set in my lineup, It’d be nice to get another starter. It’s too early to take any of the quarterbacks that remain with Brady, Manning and Romo off the board. Gates and all the tight ends are available as are a few receivers like Burress, Wes Welker and Roy Williams. So is Carson Palmer. Gates is the top tight end, though, and I’m going to count on one of the above WRs to slip to my next pick. Let’s see what happens.

It’s not a shock that Burress, Welker and Palmer are all off the board now. Roy Williams is still there and he’ll make a nice number-two in my lineup. I’m passing over the quarterback position, but Big Ben, Derek Anderson and Donovan McNabb are still there and I’d be happy with any of the three falling to me. But, PC Drafter tells me five teams still need quarterbacks so I’m having my doubts.

At this pick, McNabb is still on the board. So is Jay Cutler. Donovan has looked great in preseason though and despite having Westbrook, I like McNabb here. So far that gives me a starting lineup of McNabb, Westbrook, Lewis, Burress, Fitzgerald and Gates.

This pick is a tough decision. I have all of my major starters. I’m thinking running back, just to ensure I have some depth at the position with an aging Lewis and a potential fragile back in Westbrook. Kevin Smith has gained a lot of momentum over the summer camps and he is a high-upside back.

Here’s another decision that requires some thought. That’s why these are often key rounds in the draft, because it’s where you can pass up defenses to build depth at other positions. With three running backs already on the team, we have the option of just about anything and everything with this pick. Among the picks pcDrafter recommends is the New England defense and that might be the best idea based on the fact I’m pretty comfortable with my starters. Having the highest ranked defense is the way to go here.

At this pick I’m going with Selvin Young. The pick closes out my running backs and that’s never a bad idea to finish that position first. Young has a bye week of 8 so he fits in nicely with Lewis and Westbrook as far as byes and matchups.

With the quarterbacks going off the board, I think now is a good time to take a backup. I like McNabb a lot, but he obviously has had injury problems despite entering this season healthy. Matt Schaub is on the board and so are Jason Campbell, Vince Young and Jon Kitna. ADP tells me Kitna is too early to pick, but he has a great matchup in week 7 against the Texans when McNabb has a bye. More importantly, I like his garbage time potential should McNabb go down, and I think he could out-perform his ADP of the 12th round. I’m rolling the dice a little and going with Kitna here.

I’m lacking some depth at WR so here’s a good time to fix that. There are some decent options out there, but not all of them make sense. Joey Galloway is there but he has a bye week of 10 just like Owens. Patrick Crayton is there but we already have Owens so the bye would be an issue as well. Nate Burleson is another option, but again has a bye week of four like Williams. I hate making decisions based on bye weeks but later in the draft it becomes a little more important to me. In my main drafts this year, Burleson has gained some popularity so I’m going to overlook the byes.

One thing about pcDrafter I’ve talked about in other articles has been the kicker selection. There are people, like me, who really value the kicker. While I’ve tried to become more realistic about when to take one, there is always the GM who selects one early. On pcDrafter, all the kickers are still there and Steven Gostkowski is the top one. This most likely won’t be the case in your draft at pick 12. I’ll go against pcDrafter’s advice and take a top kicker right now.

With two QBs, four RBs and three WRs, I’m pretty set. And I have a stud kicker and a top-notch defense. With four picks left, I need a team, a kicker, a tight end and a wideout. Of those available like Bobby Engram and Jerry Porter, I prefer D.J. Hackett alongside of Steve Smith in Carolina.

Randy McMichael, TE
As Rick Tittsler said, Randy McMichael is the forgotten TE after a truly forgettable season. That can work to your advantage in 2008. Keep an eye on his ADP as your draft nears and consider targeting him as your backup TE, especially for those climate-controlled playoff weeks late in the season.

Conclusion
Overall, I’m pretty happy with my team. This time, though, Team 4 beat me out for the highest total potential points. My team did have the highest potential among points from my starters however. I’m pleased with my quarterbacks and I think I’ve backed myself up at running back with Selvin Young and Kevin Smith. Wide receiver is solid with Fitzgerald and Roy Williams, but my backups are questionable with Hackett and Burleson. As I’ve said in other mocks, receiver is a good position to pick-pocket off the waiver wire once the season starts, and I’ll always tell you my story about claiming Mike Furrey two years ago. Gates at tight end, New England at defense and Gostkowski at kicker are all among near the top at their respective positions.
