The number three spot in fantasy leagues this year presents the first real quandry in my opinion. Most would agree that the top two choices should be LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson (Minn) respectively, but what should be done with number three?
I used the powerful drafting tool PC Drafter, free with your 4for4.com membership to find out exactly what kind of team I could expect to get from the number three spot, using a standard scoring system in a 10 team league. In this article, I'll explain who I chose and I why I chose them in route to what I believe would be a winning fantasy team.
I used the FFTOC scoring system and set my Position Min/Max values such that the Computer teams couldn’t draft more than two QBs, TEs, kickers, or team defenses, and no more than four running backs and a maximum of four wide receivers. The lineup was based on 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 T-Def.
First Round: Brian Westbrook, RB, Philadelphia
I was torn here between Westbrook, Steven Jackson, and Tom Brady. I was also tempted by Randy Moss and Joseph Addai. This is why I feel as though the number three spot presents difficulty. In the end, I decided that Steven Jackson's holdout makes him a higher candidate for injury (a la Larry Johnson last year) and Tom Brady is unlikely to repeat his record setting 2007 season. Therefore, I went with Westbrook who will remain the focal point of the Eagle's offense, and has been one of the best players in fantasy football over the last few years.
Second Round: Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona
With the elite running backs gone and with Westbrook already on my roster, this pick came down to the best WR or QB in my opinion. Terrell Owens is in his mid-thirties now and I believe in picking a quarterback late, though Tony Romo was an option here. For me, Fitzgerald just barely edges Braylon Edwards as my second round pick.
Third Round: Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland
I believe that Lewis has found himself rejuvinated. I considered another WR here with several great options available, but I wanted to lock up another running back early, so I chose Lewis over the inconsistent Maroney and the unproven Michael Turner.
Fourth Round: Plaxico Burress, WR, New York Giants
The injuries concern me with Burress, but I was thrilled to get him in the fourth round. He missed most of the team's practices throughout last season and it didn't mess up the synch he has with Eli Manning and the Giants offense, so the contract situation doesn't concern me either. With Burress and Fitzgerald, I feel as though I have an outstanding starting WR tandem.
Fifth Round: LenDale White, RB, Tennessee
White may find himself in a running back-by-committee (RBBC) situation this year, but he should without a doubt be the primary back, notching at least 15 carries a game including all the short yardage ones. In the fifth round, I was happy to find White, who will fill in on bye-weeks and could be a good starter should Lewis or Westbrook miss any time with injuries.
Sixth Round: Jeremy Shockey, TE, New Orleans
Shockey wants to prove that he's still an elite pass catcher in the NFL. Now he's going to one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL, with one of the best quarterbacks, under one of the most creative young minds in the game (HC Sean Payton) calling the plays. Oh yeah, and Coach Payton knows Shockey from his breakout rookie year when Payton was on the Giants' staff.
Seventh Round: Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle
No matter how many of Hasselbeck's receivers get injured or traded, he still manages to put up good numbers in Mike Holmgren's pass-happy system. I'm figuring he'll do it one more year, and that Seattle will continue their trend of high pass-to-rush ratio (almost reaching 60 percent passing).
Eighth Round: Santana Moss, WR, Washington
Remember that Moss is only a couple of years removed from being an elite receiver. While 2005 may have been a career year for him, I think that with some big targets taking the pressure off, and new HC Jim Zorn installing a new West Coast style offense, Moss should find some prominence once again. He'll be a great bye-week play when Burress and Fitzgerald are off.
Ninth Round: Chester Taylor, RB, Minnesota
Everyone knows Adrian Peterson is the man in Minnesota. However, in the ninth round as my fourth running back, I'll gladly take a chance on Taylor. Peterson is a physical back who has had injury problems throughout his career. Taylor is a starting caliber back and will be running behind possibly the best line in the league. Even if Peterson stays healthy, the coaching staff will be sure to get Taylor the ball in a change-of-pace role. He's worth this pick.
Tenth Round: Matt Schaub, QB, Houston
The injuries concern me a little, as Houston's O-Line allowed Schaub to get beat up badly last season. However, when Schaub was on the field, he was productive. I also could've gone with Brett Favre here, and that's certainly a viable option after what he accomplished last season. I think Schaub will be a great backup to Hasselbeck, so I feel I've solidified the QB position.
Eleventh Round: Minnesota Vikings Defense
It's going to be amazing what a difference Jared Allen will make on the Vikings' defense. His presence will make the other DE's such as Ray Edwards and Brian Robison better, as well as making the secondary look much improved. He'll generate sacks and pressure, leading to more turnovers. Additionally, RS Aundrae Allison is developing into a solid returner and should take a couple to the house this season.
Twelfth Round: Stephen Gostkowski, K, New England
My philosophy is to draft the kicker on the team that scores the most points. After the Patriots 2007 season, I think that Gostkowski is about the surest option out there at the kicker position. I thought about taking Vincent Jackson here, but thought I'd round out my starting lineup instead.
Thirteenth Round: Vincent Jackson, WR, San Diego
I was happy to see that I still got Jackson after considering him last round. With Fitzgerald, Burress, Santana Moss, and Jackson, I feel I have depth at WR.
Fourteenth Round: Randy McMichael, TE, St. Louis
Coming off a down year, McMichael could be a sleeper this season. Al Saunders takes over as offensive coordinator, and he's spent the past few years designing plays for Pro Bowlers Chris Cooley and Tony Gonzales. In the fourteenth round, I was backing up my TE, K, and Defense. I decided to go with McMichael here.
Fifteenth Round: Nate Kaeding, K, San Diego
Again, I believe that high scoring teams have the best chance to produce high-scoring kickers. With Kaeding as my backup kicker, I don't see my fantasy team missing a beat during Gostkowski's bye week.
Sixteenth Round: Oakland Raiders Defense
The last round of the draft, and I needed to backup my defense. I decided that I would use 4for4.com's strength of schedule feature and decided that Oakland's defense matched up well as a counterpart to Minnesota's. This is especially true considering that the Raiders play the Ravens in week 8, during Minnesota's bye.
