When you are drafting No. 6 in a twelve team draft, it doesn’t elicit the excitement like choosing 1st where you get the player of your choice or 12th where you get back-to-back picks. But you can still be successful and draft a championship team from the sixth position.
I always try to fill the skill positions before I worry about the kicker and defense so keep that in mind. I also try to get my two running backs early unless there is great value at WR or QB.
For this draft, there are roster limits. You cannot draft more than four RBs and four WRs and two of all the other positions. The total roster is 15 with starters at QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, K, DEF. I will be using PCDrafter Gold with the rest of the draft being decided by ADP.
NOTE CHRIS’ EXCELLENT TIP: If I didn’t have the roster constraints, I wouldn’t even bother with a second kicker or defense and load up with another wide receiver and running back.
PICK 1.6
The draft starts out with the obvious as Tomlinson, Peterson, Jackson and Westbrook going right off the board. So the key is the fifth pick and in this case, Frank Gore is selected. This leaves me with three interesting choices: Tom Brady, Randy Moss or a running back. Last year, you would be kicking yourself if you passed on either Patriot, but like most other experts, I don’t think they will repeat 2007. They will still be the best at their positions, but I can’t pass on a chance to get a very good running back at this point. And actually, the No. 5 team helped me because I thought I would have to choose between Gore, Joseph Addai or Marion Barber. Since Gore is gone, it will be one of the other two. Although most draft boards have Addai ranked higher, I think the Cowboys offense is going to be better than the Colts this season and Barber is going to benefit from the departure of Julius Jones and the continued progress of Tony Romo. I go against the consensus pick in this case.
SELECTION: RB Marion Barber, Dallas
PICK 2.7
I have my No. 1 running back so I like to be flexible here. I want the best player available at his position - either a QB, RB or WR. My highest ranked player at each position is QB Tony Romo, RB Brandon Jacobs and WR Larry Fitzgerald. Wow! This is a tough choice. I have always liked Fitzgerald and I think Arizona’s offense is going to be better this season so Fitzgerald is a slam dunk. Romo’s numbers will get better too as he has another year under his belt and his offense that is considered one of the NFC’s best. But Jacobs looks really attractive here. The Giants will be dedicated to the run and Jacobs will be the main man in the backfield for Big Blue. Romo would give me two Cowboys which wouldn’t be a bad thing, but I would also have two major players out Week 10 when a game could determine my playoff fate. I would also love to take Fitzgerald here, but I can’t resist having another big time back on my team.
SELECTION: RB Brandon Jacobs, NY Giants
PICK 3.6
I have my two backs so I am looking at a QB or WR for my third pick. Chad Johnson and Torry Holt are both still available, but so is Drew Brees. I had Brees ranked right behind Romo who I considered in second round so this is a pretty easy pick for me. I still like both Johnson and Holt, but Brees is going to have a monster year if the Saints stay healthy and with the addition of Jeremy Shockey, Brees stock is even higher. I am very excited about this pick, even more then my first two picks because I feel I got one of the top QBs in the third round.
SELECTION: QB Drew Brees, New Orleans
PICK 4.7
My roster is pretty obvious at this point. My backfield is strong, but I don’t have a receiver or tight end yet. Even though there are some starting running backs still on the board like Edgerrin James and Lendale White, I think I can still get some RB depth later and I need to address my starting lineup. So, I am going to draft for need here. My choices at WR are Roy Williams, Lee Evans, Brandon Marshall, Dwayne Bowe, Santonio Holmes and Calvin Johnson. Williams is the veteran of the crew and has had the best numbers in his career. Marshall and Holmes are both entering their third season which is usually when receivers in the NFL hit their stride. Bowe and Johnson are entering their second seasons. Bowe had a very good rookie season in a very average offense. Johnson wasn’t the stud many thought he would be last year. I think he will rebound and is a sleeper this season but not enough to take him here. Williams has peaked in his career plus I think Johnson will take some balls away from him this season. At this point, I like Evans, Marshall and Holmes. Both Marshall and Holmes play on good offenses with strong quarterbacks and both will be the No. 1 receivers on their offenses this season. Evans is also a clear No. 1 but I have some worries about QB Trent Edwards. Buffalo’s offense will be pretty good up front and RB Marshawn Lynch will create some opportunities in the passing game. I am going to eliminate Marshall because he was suspended by the NFL for the first three games of the season for off-the-field issues. Although that might be pared down to two games, I like the 16 games that Holmes and Evans will play barring injury. My final choice between these two is determined by the better QB.
SELECTION: WR Santonio Holmes, Pittsburgh
PICK 5.6
Well, sometimes things just work out for you. I still need a second WR and a tight end and Tony Gonzalez is available. But of all the receivers I considered in the fourth round, only one is available and that is Evans who was my second choice in that round. I think Evans’ numbers will go up because the Bills will give Edwards some more opportunities to go downfield and that is where Evans is best. Gonzalez is attractive, but only two tight ends have gone off the board so I should be able to get a decent one the next round if I choose to do so.
SELECTION: WR Lee Evans, Buffalo
PICK 6.7
Well, things worked out again. I passed on a tight end the last round because only two were taken and now only one more has been taken since I selected. And my No. 1 tight end at the time, Tony Gonzalez, was not taken. There are some other things I might consider like more depth at running back or wide receiver, but the tight end position can be very important and if you can get a guy like Gonzalez at pick 67(his ADP is 74) to fill out your starting lineup at the skill positions, you grab him. But there is another issue – the bye week. If I select Gonzalez, my two wide receivers and tight end will all have their bye in Week 6. So, I have decided to bypass Gonzalez and choose my next tight end on the board. The good news is that there isn’t much of a gap between the two. Looks like I will be rooting for the Saints offense a lot this season.
SELECTION: TE Jeremy Shockey, New Orleans
PICK 7.6
Now, my fantasy strategy goes into effect. I have all my starting skill positions filled, but I still have two starting positions to fill - kicker and defense. I don’t hold either at a high value because there are 32 available at each position and although there is no doubt some are better than others, I think the difference is minimal and hard to predict. What I want is depth at skill positions especially running back and wide receiver. There are still some starting running backs available – Selvin Young and DeAngelo Williams to name two. There is also a No. 1 receiver available in Santana Moss. But I like the running backs in this position. Young is a little more attractive because you know Mike Shanahan will run the ball. Williams might be the starter at the beginning of the season, but rookie Jonathan Stewart should get plenty of touches and could supplant Williams as the starter sooner rather then later.
SELECTION: RB Selvin Young, Denver
PICK 8.7
Now, there are only platoon or backup running backs remaining so I am going to look at wide receiver for depth. There are some No. 2 wide receivers on good offenses available and actually some No. 1 receivers as well. Several names jump out at me including Nate Burleson who basically takes over the No. 1 Seattle receiver spot with Bobby Engram out for at least a month. Patrick Crayton is also intriguing because of the high-powered Cowboys offense and Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice might even be considered 1a and 1b receivers for Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota. But in the end, I like Joey Galloway with Jeff Garcia throwing to him.
SELECTION: WR Joey Galloway, Tampa Bay
PICK 9.6
The first defense went off the board last round, but I still want more depth at this time. Some of the names I considered last round are still there and I love Tony Romo and his weapons so why not bring aboard another Cowboy. Patrick Crayon is the clear No. 2 wide receiver now that Terry Glenn has departed Dallas.
SELECTION: WR Patrick Crayton, Dallas
PICK 10.7
Because I have set the draft parameters to limit a team to four receivers, I have to pass on a guy like Nate Burleson who is still available and would give me even more depth at wide receiver. So, it’s back to running back, tight end or quarterback. By the way, three defenses off the board, but I am still not going to bite. One thing that is interesting at this point of this draft is that both Houston running backs are available. The Texans would love Ahman Green to take the job, but because of his injuries, his backup Chris Brown could end up being the man in Houston. I still need a running back so I am going to take a chance here and select one of the two Texan running backs. The final factor is who has the lead as of right now during the draft.
SELECTION: RB Ahman Green, Houston
PICK 11.6
A backup QB might be good at this point but only one other team hasn’t selected their backup yet which means if I have two that I like, one of them will be available. So we will come back to that later. What I do like right now is the quality tight ends still available to backup Shockey. My No. 10 overall is still on the board and doesn’t have the same bye week so I will grab him.
SELECTION: TE Randy McMichael, St. Louis
PICK 12.7
Sometimes it’s just a feeling, but the time to select a defense is now. There are a couple quality defenses including Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Tennessee. Pittsburgh’s defense faded at the end of last season so that is a red flag for me and Baltimore’s defense is getting old. Bring on the Titans.
SELECTION: D Tennessee
PICK 13.6
All the quarterback slots are filled so I will wait until round 15 for that. I need a kicker or a backup defense and since the No. 1 kicker is still available, I will choose him although I am not doing backflips and proclaiming myself the champion because of this pick.
SELECTION: K Stephen Gostkowski, New England
PICK 14.7
Time for my backup defense so I am going to go with a sleeper.
SELECTION: D Washington
PICK15.6
Well, my backup QB isn’t that important if Brees stays healthy. Basically, he will be needed one week (the bye week). So, I am gambling that Brees will remain injury-free for the season and going with a young QB on a good team. There are plenty of young QBs still remaining, but few are on a good team. It leaves me with one choice.
SELECTION: QB Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota
Here is my roster from the 2008 draft:
QB: Drew Brees, New Orleans
RB: Marion Barber, Dallas
RB: Brandon Jacbos, NY Giants
WR: Santonio Holmes, Pittsburgh
WR: Lee Evans, Buffalo
TE: Jeremy Shockey, New Orleans
K: Stephen Gostkowski, New England
DEF: Tennessee Titans
Bench
QB: Tavaris Jackson, Minnesota
RB: Selvin Young, Denver
RB: Ahman Green, Houston
WR: Joey Galloway, Tampa Bay
WR: Patrick Crayton, Dallas
TE: Randy McMichael, St. Louis
DEF: Washington Redskins
I am very satisfied with this draft. My wide receivers have some questions, but I feel my depth will help if Holmes or Evans falter. The PC Drafter also liked my draft ranking me first on overall projected points and second in starter projected points.
