Against the Grain...
Last year I was gearing up for two very different drafts. In one league, I was going to be picking first. In the other league, I ended up with the very last pick.
So now it’s time to maneuver away from those extremes and move towards the middle. With the help of PC Drafter, an outstanding tag team partner, I will pick seventh in a twelve team draft. The computer teams will be making their selections based on an ADP method.
The draft will be 16 rounds. All of the teams in the league will be required to draft two quarterbacks, four running backs, four wide receivers, two tight ends, two kickers, and two defensive teams. Each team will start one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one kicker, and one defensive team.
I must admit that in recent years I have started to move away from the philosophy of grabbing a surplus of running backs in the early rounds. There is a large cast of characters out there thanks to the running back by committee philosophy, and I think there are very few first-rate wide receivers in 2008. I’m not opposed to taking a running back in the first round, but after that I’m going to look to load up on receivers. My goal is to ensure that seven remains a very lucky number.
Pick 1.7
The first six picks were running backs – LaDanian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson, Brian Westbrook, Frank Gore, and Joseph Addai. Along with several RBs, PC Drafter likes Tom Brady. The running back I would consider is Marion Barber.
My pick is Tom Brady. He’s not going to duplicate his 2007 numbers, but he should do quite well. There are no strong teams within his division (Brett Favre can’t help the Jets on defense) and New England also plays Kansas City, Oakland, and the entire NFC West. The schedule is too easy for Brady not to have some fun and post big numbers. I’m set at quarterback, and now I need to get some targets for Tom.
Pick 2.6
Most of the picks after Brady were running backs, aside from Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, and Peyton Manning. PC Drafter is recommending I take the big back from the Big Apple, Brandon Jacobs. I like Jacobs, but he falls short of the elite running backs and I can still get one of the best receivers. So I took Larry Fitzgerald. Although Matt Leinart has a lot to prove, I think he’ll be fine and even if he doesn’t Kurt Warner is a great option off the bench. I can plug Fitzgerald into the lineup and leave him there all season except for his bye week. There aren’t very many receivers you can feel that secure about in 2008.
Pick 3.7
I am really glad I grabbed Fitzgerald, as a major receiver run took place. Terrell Owens, Braylon Edwards, Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, and the Cincinnati duo of T.J. and Ocho Cinco were all drafted. The pickings at receiver are already getting slim. Steve Smith would be an ideal pick, but I’m not thrilled he’s going to be out two games. Like Smith, Brandon Marshall is going to miss time. Anquan Boldin would be nice except I don’t want two Arizona receivers. Torry Holt is on what looks to be a bad team, and Plaxico Burress always seems to have nagging injuries. PC Drafter tells me to ignore the receiver position and take LenDale White. This pick can definitely be regarded as controversial, because the man I chose is ranked lower than a lot of other guys. He also happens to play alongside Brady, and his name is Wes Welker. In one league last year, I picked Welker in the eighteenth and final round. Now I am happy to grab him in the third. All of the positive intangibles with Brady also belong to Welker, and they form a nice combo. I know there were a lot of talented guys out there, but they can bring trouble and Welker is safe and dependable.
Pick 4.6
With a starting quarterback and two starting receivers already on my team, I better start looking at the running back position. Remember when PC Drafter suggested I take LenDale White in the third round? As it turns out, he was still available. PC Drafter remains confident in White, and I would have taken him in round three if I hadn’t felt a desperate need to get another receiver. Rookie RB Chris Johnson will certainly figure into the mix in Tennessee, but White should get all the touchdown opportunities and plenty of yards. He should rush for over 1,000 yards and could rush for 10 touchdowns or more.
Pick 5.7
PC Drafter is recommending Thomas Jones. As usual, my trusted advisor has a wise thought. Jones is one of the few remaining running backs who will definitely receive a sizeable amount of work. I realize that Jones isn’t a young back, but unlike Ahman Green, his durability hasn’t been a problem. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2007 but managed only two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving). With veterans Brett Favre and Alan Faneca wearing green, Jones will be part of a better offense and his productivity will jump.
Pick 6.6
I have my starters lined up at running back, wide receiver, and quarterback. PC Drafter wants me to take Jeremy Shockey. I think Shockey is going to have a nice season in New Orleans, but I still wanted to grab one more running back. It’s a force of habit when I draft wide receivers and quarterbacks early. I feel I must have quantity in the backfield. And the man who is currently Denver’s starter is still on the board. So I snagged Selvin Young. It’s entirely possible Mike Shanahan will bench Young at some point, or will throw several other unknowns into the mix, but Young should have some nice games and he’ll be a good option to have in case I want to sit White or Jones. In fact, he could easily beat one of them out and become a full-time starter.
Pick 7.7
PC Drafter had advocated Jeremy Shockey earlier, and I opted to go in a different direction. This time, I’m going to go ahead and take the New Orleans tight end. I have to be honest and say Shockey isn’t my favorite player, but he should produce numbers that are better than most at his position. New Orleans needs a second target to take some heat off of Marques Colston and Shockey should fit the bill.
Pick 8.6
I’m using the popular FFTOC scoring option and defenses are valuable. Now that we’ve taken care of the offensive side of the ball (aside from the kicking position) PC Drafter says I should go in a defensive direction and I agree. That direction points me to San Diego and a talented Chargers defense. I couldn’t agree more. The Chargers have four games against Oakland and Kansas City, and as an added bonus they also have offensively-challenged Buffalo, Miami, and Atlanta on the docket. The Chargers should put up big numbers. I could have waited to take a defense, but if you can get one of the best, you should do it. Remember, when drafting, its better to start a run at a position and not be finishing it.
Pick 9.7
We are at the point in the draft where you can go in a lot of directions. I still need a starting kicker, but it’s too early to take one. PC Drafter thinks I should add depth at receiver and take Tampa Bay veteran Joey Galloway. I can understand the reasoning behind taking Galloway, but he’s going to drop off soon and I think this is the year it will happen. That won’t stop me from taking a veteran though, as I snatched Brett Favre. Brady and Favre on the same team...the media is going to be watching my team’s every move. Anyways, Favre will only start in week four when Brady is off and he plays Arizona that week. The Cardinals aren’t a team to fear on defense and Brett should be familiar with the New York offense by then. I did consider Jason Campbell, but he plays at Dallas when Brady is off.
Pick 10.6
I still need depth at receiver, but PC Drafter thinks I should add another player to the backfield. PC Drafter wants me to take Houston’s Ahman Green. Green would make a nice choice, but he can’t stay healthy. All it took was one play in Houston’s pre-season opener for him to get hurt. I can just see him spraining his wrist while going for a soda refill at Taco Cabana. So I will go ahead and close out my roster requirement at running back by taking Seattle’s Maurice Morris. Morris had his moments last year when Shaun Alexander ran out of gas, and although the Seahawks signed Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett it’s not out of the question Morris could see the most work. He’s a good gamble at this stage of the draft and all four of my running backs will have different bye weeks.
Pick 11.7
I absolutely, positively need to get some wide receiver depth. The pickings are slim, but all I need is someone to help me through the bye weeks. PC Drafter supports me starting a run at kicker by taking New England’s Stephen Gostkowski. While I certainly like him as a possible selection, I’ll wait a little longer to take a kicker. Ronald Curry isn’t a great option as a starter, but he’s a reliable reserve. I’m not wild about the fact he’ll be playing San Diego and Baltimore on Fitzgerald and Welker’s bye weeks, but there aren’t very many starters left. Curry is good for some decent weeks so he’s my pick.
Pick 12.6
PC Drafter still has eyes for Stephen Gostkowski. But I’d rather get a second tight end. Jeremy Shockey has had durability issues in the past and Greg Olsen is available. The Bears have an awful mess at quarterback, but someone has to catch the ball on those rare occasions when Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton complete a pass to players wearing the same colored jerseys. Devin Hester gives Chicago a deep threat at wide receiver, but Hester’s touchdowns will likely come from long range, meaning Chicago needs a reliable red zone target. Olsen has the talent to be more than a goal line threat. He could easily emerge as Chicago’s leading receiver. Landing Chicago’s leading receiver isn’t something to brag about, but Olsen should be a nice role player.
Pick 13.7
Stephen Gostkowski, come on down! PC Drafter now has you at the head of the class, and it’s time for you to join the squad. He’ll compliment the Brady/Welker duo nicely.
Pick 14.6
It’s time for a swing for the fences pick. PC Drafter says I should take Jacksonville wide receiver Reggie Williams, who scored ten touchdowns last year. But I’m pretty confident that was a fluke. Since Jimmy Smith retired, there hasn’t been a reliable receiving option in Jacksonville. Still, I guess you could consider Williams a proven commodity. Robert Meachem is anything but a sure thing. Last year, due to injury, New Orleans was unable to utilize Meachem despite drafting him in the first round. Meachem looked good last Thursday in pre-season action and there is no sure-fire starter opposite Marques Colston. David Patten is a proven veteran, but Meachem has far more upside. Meachem has the potential to come out of nowhere and deliver solid numbers. I’d rather take a chance on something special than go for something ordinary.
Pick 15.7
PC Drafter states I should take the New Orleans defense. I think the Saints will have a much-improved defense this season, but New Orleans has the same bye week as San Diego. So I will take Washington. The Redskins have to play Pittsburgh when San Diego is off, but at least the game is at home. With Jason Taylor and Andre Carter, Washington should at least offer sack potential if nothing else.
Pick 16.6
It’s time to finally take my second kicker, and PC Drafter likes Matt Bryant. I agree, and my roster is complete.
This was a bit of an unconventional draft, and I made some selections that might have seemed odd to a lot of folks. But I have elite players at quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, and kicker. Plus I have a darn good defensive team. While I don’t have a superstar running back, I have enough options to be respectable and I’ll be working the waiver wire hard each week.
PC Drafter agreed, as my team came out of the draft with the highest amount of player points. Below are the rosters for each team and the draft summary.
