The 6-1, 235-pound Wells spent most of his four-year career with the Texans as a reserve to 1,000-yard rusher Domanick Davis. Wells did start six games last season and got some playing time at fullback but the Texans had no interest in re-signing the former Ohio State standout, who became an unrestricted free agent following the 2005 season. He finished the year with 325 rushing yards on 90 carries.
Wells currently remains unemployed.
Most observers seemed to believe that Wells' 2005 performance improved his free-agent stock and that would command more money and playing time by leaving Houston. But other than a visit to Buffalo, he failed to draw serious interest during the free-agent signing period.
A handful of NFL teams currently have a need for experienced backfield depth (including the Dolphins and Rams); none have mentioned Wells as a candidate, however.
