on Ronnie Brown: League source said
negotiations between the Dolphins and Todd France, the
agent for 1st-round pick Brown, were at a stalemate
Wednesday evening. Messages left for France were not
returned. The 2 sides remain about $3 million apart on the
guaranteed money Brown is seeking. "Obviously, we would
like to have the guy here yesterday, but we understand this
part of it and we are going to coach the guys who are here
and do the best we can with those guys," Saban said. "When
that guy comes in, he is going to have to suffer the
consequences of where he is relative to everybody else."

on Ronnie Brown: Agent Todd France said he
spoke with the Dolphins at length Tuesday about getting a
contract done for RB Brown, the #2 overall pick in the NFL
draft. Another source said a deal to end Brown's absence
from training camp could be done as early as today. "We're
working to get Ronnie a fair deal and get him to camp as
soon as possible," France said. "We're working hard on
trying to find some common ground." The Dolphins and France
were about $3 million apart in guaranteed money on their
respective offers as of Monday and are expected to resume
talks today.

on Ronnie Brown: The Dolphins and the agent for RB
Brown, the #2 overall pick in the draft, remain about $3 million
apart on the amount of guaranteed money they are willing to pay
for his contract, according to 2 sources within the NFL Players
Association. Agent Todd France declined to discuss the talks and
wouldn't comment on information that indicated the Dolphins are
offering roughly $19 million in guarantees to Brown. Based on the
$24 million in guarantees given to #1 overall pick Alex Smith by
SF, Brown is expecting about $22 million in guarantees.

: Dolphins Rookie RB Ronnie Brown still has
not signed. Brown's agent, Todd France, said in an e-mail
Wednesday evening there was "nothing to report," so the
holdout will continue. With Brown out, RBs Sammy Morris and
Lamar Gordon are getting work with the starters.

on Ronnie Brown: Dolphins RB Brown, the #2
overall pick in the draft, missed his 1st day of practice
because of a contract holdup. While most everyone,
including coach Nick Saban, understood that Brown had to
wait for #1 overall pick Alex Smith to sign with SF, this
is not the way Brown or the Dolphins were hoping to begin
his career. Combined with the attention given RB Ricky
Williams, Brown is really out of sight, out of mind.

on Ronnie Brown: While 1st-round RB
Brown didn't show up for Sunday's reporting day, the
Dolphins did sign their other remaining draft picks, DE
Matt Roth and DT Kevin Vickerson. Brown, the Dolphins'
overall #2 pick, isn't expected to be in training camp
until the 49ers sign QB Alex Smith, the overall #1
selection. That's not anticipated until Friday at best,
when the 49ers are scheduled to report.

on Ronnie Brown: the word from Miami is (RB) Brown
may skip some early training camp time waiting for QB Alex
Smith (the NFL's #1 pick) to sign and establish the rookie
market. Brown was the #2 pick overall, an almost unheard of
level for a RB coming out of college. On the flip side, the
buzz around Ricky Williams' conditioning is positive. He's
now within 10-pounds of his former NFL playing weight.

on Ronnie Brown: As for Dolphins rookie RB
Brown, the holdup for him is more about recent history. In
the past 6 years, the #2 overall pick in the NFL draft has
not signed until after the #1 pick. Ultimately, missing a
few days of practice might not hurt Brown much because RB
is more of an instinctive position. Brown also is diligent
about staying in shape.

: With Ricky Williams planning to return, there will
be a glut at RB with Ronnie Brown (from whom Dolphin
coaches want to see more assertiveness), Williams, Lamar
Gordon (who opened at first team in last weekend's
minicamp), Travis Minor and Sammy Morris (who said he has
been used exclusively at TB). Morris could shift to H-back.

on Ronnie Brown: RB Brown had to figure he
had a good chance to be a rookie starter for the Dolphins
ahead of various hangers-on at RB, but now Williams looks
to be headed back into the mix to change everything. "If he
does come back, I think coach will keep a place for me in
the offense. It might even create opportunities for me to
be able to play some at a different position," Brown said.
"Ronnie's done a good job," Saban said. "I think that he —
I don't know how I can say this — sometimes I would like to
see him… I think he's such a good guy he doesn't want to
offend anybody. That's good to a point, but you have to be
able to take the next step and do the thing you've got to
do to play your best football.

: One of the most intriguing qualities of rookie RB
Ronnie Brown is his ability to play multiple positions. In
addition to TB, Brown has lined up at WR and FB at times
during his college career. That versatility could come in
handy for the Dolphins, particularly if Ricky Williams
returns to the team and can be an effective player this
season. Brown and Williams could be on the field, or even
the same backfield, at the same time because Brown could be
the FB. This would be a huge upgrade for the Dolphins, who
lacked any real threat in the backfield last season after
Williams abruptly retired.

on Ronnie Brown: RB Brown is
participating in a 3-day Dolphins rookie minicamp that
begins today in Davie, but whether the #2 pick in last
week's NFL Draft will be on the practice field when
training camp begins in late July isn't as certain.
Although he will sign a waiver to participate in offseason
sessions, NFL rules state the Dolphins must have Brown
under contract for the TB to report to training camp. That
will require the Dolphins and Atlanta-based agent Todd
France to formulate what will be the largest and
potentially most complicated contract in franchise history.

on RB Ronnie Brown: With the #2 pick in the 2005 NFL
Draft, the Dolphins selected RB Ronnie Brown. The Dolphins
need major help on offense and Brown is the one guy that
gives them an instant upgrade rushing and passing the ball.
In fantasy leagues that reward points for receptions, Brown
will be extremely value in 2005. In all but TD-only
leagues, Brown figures to be a top-15 fantasy pick this
year. In keeper leagues, Brown is an elite prospect.
Assuming the Dolphins improve over the next 2-3 years,
Brown figures to approach 60-receptions and 1,200 rushing
yards per season (ala Marshall Faulk and Edge James back in
2000). In short, because of his multifaceted game, Brown
could evolve into the NFL's best fantasy weapon.

on Ronnie Brown: There doesn't seem to be
all that much that's exciting about Ronnie Brown. Simple
name. Simple guy. Doesn't have dreadlocks. Doesn't cause
controversy. Doesn't complain when he's not starting. No
nickname. His Auburn teammates tried to tab him as "Hummer"
once, but unlike Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, whom he
backed up, it never really stuck. "My style, huh?" Brown
said. "Hey, it's gotten me to this point. My hair? It's
always been the same."Brown is soft-spoken, polite,
cordial, humble and sincere. And as of Saturday, he'll
forever be known as the 2nd pick of the 2005 NFL Draft and
the 1st pick of Dolphins coach Nick Saban.

San Diego Tribune
on Ronnie Brown: RB Brown's football
résumé was not distinguished at Auburn. He started only 21
of 47 games and was the featured ball carrier only when
someone else was injured. In 3 of his 4 seasons he failed
to run for more than 1,000 yards, and in two of them he
didn't even reach 450. He was not a finalist for the Doak
Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top
collegiate RB, and the best he could on the All-SEC squad
as a senior was 2nd team. Yet when NFL Commissioner Paul
Tagliabue steps to the lectern next weekend and identifies
the first RB selected in the '05 draft, Ronnie Brown likely
will hear his name called. It will be a testament not only
to his abilities, but also his selflessness.

: It's not often two RBs from the same
college are picked in the NFL Draft. To have two selected
in the first few hours of the draft is almost unheard of.
Until now. Ronnie Brown and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams
will finally split up their act after successful careers at
Auburn. "It's definitely unusual to have two players of
that ability play in the same backfield, but I think they
found a way to make it work," said Dennis Green, coach of
the Cardinals. "Both of them had great confidence in
themselves. Both of them love to compete. Both of them
probably will be in the top 10 in the draft."
