My Perfect Draft - Drafting 8th in a 10 Team League
By Chris Kucharski
This is my favorite part of writing for 4for4.com because I get to use PCDrafter and my knowledge to create a fantasy team. For this draft, I once again will be selecting 8th of 10 teams. With only 10 teams in the league, it makes the turn very interesting for fantasy owners at the end of the draft order.
The rules are standard with QBs getting 3 points for TD throws. That is always something to keep an eye on in your league rules as some will give you 4 points or some might even give you 6 points. There is also no PPR (Points Per Reception) in this league which is another major factor. The only roster rule is you may have no more than two QBs on your roster. Also, you need at least one kicker and one defense and, as you will see, I will not take any more than that.
PICK 1.8
Seven picks ahead of me, seven running backs. Not a big surprise although wide receivers have shown a propsensity to show up earlier in the first round in recent seasons. Still, I have the chance to get the best receiver or best quarterback in fantasy. Or I can still get a top 10 running back which is a valuable commodity. On my draft sheet, I have Andre Johnson as my No. 1 WR and Drew Brees as my No. 1 QB. The top running back on my sheet is Jamaal Charles. PCDrafter is telling me to take Johnson. I was in a similar position last season and went with the wide receiver and it was Larry Fitzgerald. That worked out for me so why not try it again. But this time I will take the Houston stud. I have a feeling his numbers will continue to be very strong.
SELECTION: WR Andre Johnson, Houston
PICK 2.3
After my pick, 2 QBs and 2 WRs go off the board. That leaves me with my running back that I could have had in the first round (Charles) and my No. 3 QB overall (Peyton Manning). Although another receiver could be an option (Calvin Johnson), I don't want to be taking chances with running backs in the late third round. I really like how Kansas City used Charles last season and I feel offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will rely on him to take pressure off Matt Cassel. PC Drafter actually recommends Rashard Mendenhall (offensive line is still a concern), but I like Charles better.
SELECTION: RB Jamaal Charles, Kansas City
PICK 3.8
I have two strong players at two of the three most important positions so I can be flexible with my choice here. Eight wide receivers, 5 running backs and Manning have gone off the board since I picked last. PC Drafter likes RB Pierre Thomas and TE Dallas Clark. Third round is too early for a tight end, especially in a non-PPR league. I actually like Jonathan Stewart here, but I think can get him in the fourth round. My highest player on the board is a quarterback and it's not Tom Brady. I just like this guy's offense too much and think his numbers will top last season. Jerry Jones would be proud.
SELECTION: QB Tony Romo, Dallas
PICK 4.3
Pierre Thomas and Dallas Clark are still there, but so is my top ranked player Jonathan Stewart. This is an example of using a players ADP to not take him too early and get another player of value. There was a chance the teams who picked after me last round might have liked him, but the gamble paid off. So, I will take Stewart, who is the goal line guy for the Panthers and a top 15 running back overall. Charles and Stewart make me a happy owner.
SELECTION: RB Jonathan Stewart, Carolina
PICK 5.8
A couple of tight ends have finally gone off the board so it could be time to consider one. I still only have the one wide receiver and running back depth is never a bad thing. PC Drafter says TE Vernon Davis or WR Hakeem Nicks. I actually have some running backs at the top of my board right now, but they have ADPs that put them at least two rounds away. My available receivers are not ranked high at this point either which leaves me with tight end. There is no doubt Davis is a good player who finally got his act together. But I like someone else better. Jermichael Finley is actually my No. 2 tight end overall. Yes, ahead of Witten and Clark. He is only 23 and his numbers haven't even begun to peak.
SELECTION: TE Jermichael Finley, Green Bay
PICK 6.3
With only four picks since my last pick, I have one of my two top rated running backs still on the board. The best wide receiver available is Dwayne Bowe and PC Drafter is still recommending Hakeem Nicks and now Jay Cutler. This is an interesting decision as I would be selecting a starting WR or my No. 3 running back which is Brandon Jacobs. I think Nicks can have an even bigger year in 2010.
SELECTION: WR Hakeem Nicks, NY Giants
PICK 7.8
I have to be thinking RB here just because I am already in the 7th round and don't have depth in an important position. PC Drafter is telling me Eli Manning or Donovane McNabb, but I am still not in the market for a backup QB yet. My RB choices are Arian Foster and Reggie Bush. Foster appears to be the starter in Houston with that high-powered offese.
SELECTION: RB Arian Foster, Houston
PICK 8.3
Four receivers just went off the board and I have three RBs. PC Drafter still shows Manning and McNabb. I like both of them, but I think I will go with Eli because of his receivers. Still plenty of questions in Washington.
SELECTION: QB Eli Manning, NY Giants
PICK 9.8
It's time to draft depth and take some chances. PC Drafter is recommending a TE, but I think it is too early for a backup. I want another running back or wide receiver. There are a couple interesting names including the newest Bengal. I think T.O. can still put up some big numbers so he is a good risk and PC Drafter has him highly ranked at this point.
SELECTION: WR Terrell Owens, Cincinnati
Pick 10.3
There are still some good running backs available and some decent wide receivers. Clinton Portis is inriguing because when healthy, he can be productive. Washington's offense is a question mark, but I will go with PC Drafter here who recommends Portis.
SELECTION: RB Clinton Portis, Washington
Pick 11.8
With five picks left, I still need a kicker, defense and backup tight end. So that leaves me with the option of taking another running back or a couple receivers. I looked down the list and see a player that could be an insurance policy for my current roster. Steve Slaton was awesome two years ago, but couldn't hold onto the football last year and lost his job. But if Foster fails, he would be next in line with that high-powered offense.
SELECTION: Steve Slaton, Houston
Pick 12.3
There are two very good tight ends on the board and that is a need right now. Heath Miller put up career-highs last season and John Carlson has talent, but will his QB be good? There are also some receivers with upside. Eddie Royal is intriguing although the Broncos offense could struggle. And the veteran Derrick Mason has Anquan Boldin on the other side and a young gun at QB Joe Flacco. I like the veteran and maybe I can get one of those tight ends later.
SELECTION: Derrick Mason, Baltimore
Pick 13
Both tight ends are avaialable but I am also thinking Team Defense here if there is one that I highly regard. And there is one of my Top 5 still on the board.
SELECTION: Dallas Defense
Pick 14
And both tight ends are still available. Sometimes things just work out for you. I think Miller's numbers will regress.
SELECTION: John Carlson, Seattle
Pick 15
Time to pick the kicker. Listen, kickers can win a game or two for you during a fantasy season. But they are hard to predict week by week and they really are so close in talent. The one thing I make sure is to take someone who will keep his job for a full season.
SELECTION: Shayne Graham, Cincinnati
