Drafting 12th in a 12 Team League
By Scott PagelIn this mock draft I'm picking 12th in a 12 team league.
I'm again using PC Drafter and using "performance 2" as the default scoring. The draft will be 16 rounds and the lineup will consist of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K and 1 D. Rosters will be open and not limited. Usually I try to spread out my selections evenly, but I think this time I'm going to settle for maybe one kicker, and one team and worry about picking off the free agent wire. But, I'll see how it falls.
I'm in one league where this is a good strategy - load up on skill positions and really not be totally in love with your kicker or defense.
Picking 12th isn't a horrible thing, as you're hopefully about to find out. I love having the back-to-back picks from the 12th spot more so than drafting first. Sure it's nice to get Peterson, but I think the foundation of a team picking 12th is often better than one picking first.
Let's dig right in and see how things work out...
Round 1, pick 12
As expected the usual suspects are off the board. Throughout the summer, the pattern of guys like LT and Westbrook slipping to this spot continues to hold true. But, Westbrook was taken a few spots before and it's once the most dominant back in the league, LT, who is still on the board. PC Drafter's picks is Andre Johnson with LT second. Steve Slaton is still there and so are Randy Moss and Ronnie Brown. I never like to pick based on name alone, but the two most impressive names on here are LT and Moss.
LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, bye week 5
Round 2, pick 1
There are plenty of WRs to pick from at this point. As I said above, Andre Johnson is PC Drafter's pick. Steve Smith is still available and so are Calvin Johnson and Reggie Wayne. By now you know I love to stock up on running backs, so Slaton would be a real nice option too. Marion Barber and Jacobs are reach picks, but they may not be there by the time I get back to my third round pick. So, this is a pick that has to be someone I love, as well as a key to laying the foundation for the rest of my lineup. As I said above, Moss is probably the biggest name now on the board and that's hard to resist.

Round 3, pick 12
All the names I mentioned above are gone, as expected. So, now we get into that so-called 'second tier' of players. Pierre Thomas has slipped and as I've said before, seems to be gaining a lot of fantasy momentum lately as the feature back in New Orleans. Knowshon Moreno is also there and so is Marshawn Lynch. One of these next two picks, I feel, needs to be a running back because I want to sure up what I think is the most important position. I'd love to go with Thomas but he has a bye week of 5, just like LT. Normally I don't let bye weeks rule my decision early in a draft, but with running backs I'd really hate to have both them out in the same week. (PC Drafter does suggest Thomas)
Knowshon Moreno, RB, bye week 7
Round 4, pick 1
I don't see many WRs on the board I like. Roy Williams, Housh and Santonio Holmes are the top names. QBs like Warner, Rivers and Romo sit atop the board as well. Here is where I think it pays to be flexible and not necessarily stick to a RB/WR/RB/WR draft strategy. An interesting move could be to take Pierre Thomas as my third back and look for a trade at some point. But for the purposes of this mock I'm going to stick with getting the best lineup I can. Since I'm not impressed with WRs, and I think I can wait on a QB, tight end becomes the position that sticks out as having the most talent on the board. After taking Moreno, Witten is also PC Drafter's choice.

Round 5, pick 12
Four picks in and I feel like I have two solid RBs, a top-notch tight end and receiver. My biggest need right now is probably another WR and a starting QB. PC Drafter has my selection as DeSean Jackson, and I agree with this one. Braylon Edwards just went and so did Eddie Royal and Antonio Bryant. I like Jackson at least better than Royal and Bryant.

Round 6, pick 1
I just missed out on Donovan McNabb, who would have been a real nice QB to have fall to me. I still have some good choices, although I think McNabb represented the final of the real solid tier-2 guys. Now, my choices are Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler and Matt Schaub. I like Cutler the best, but I think Ryan has the better talent to throw to. PC Drafter agrees and has him slightly higher than both Cutler and Schaub. PC Drafter also likes Derrick Ward or Ray Rice, while Ryan is third on the list. I feel QB is a bigger need and waiting for 22 more picks to take one could really hurt me.

My key starters are all in place:
QB - Ryan
RB - Tomlinson, Moreno
WR - Moss, Jackson
TE - Witten
Now, my biggest need is depth at RB. I had a chance to take Moreno and Thomas for three great running backs, but opted for a better overall starting lineup. Round seven is a good time to start the process of gaining depth. Of course, that doesn't mean you take an RB just because you feel you need one. In this case, it just so happened that Ray Rice is at the top of the list and PC Drafter like him as well - slipping from the last time I picked. He'll be a good fit in week 5 when LT has his bye because Rice and the Ravens play Cincy. However, he's got the same bye as Moreno, which will affect my later selections.

Round 8, pick 1
By now you know my feeling on picking defenses but with none off the board and feeling pretty good about my lineup, why not take the top-rated one. Recall, its usually better to be the guy starting a run at a given position than the one finishing it.

Round 9, pick 12
Now is the time to really fill out the roster. I'm short on wide receivers so taking at least one is a must. Everywhere else I feel pretty good except for needing a kicker, but there's plenty of time for that. Leon Washington is on the board here and is PC Drafter's choice. I like him too, for his special teams play and a most-likely increased role in the offense. Ahmad Bradshaw is also on the board as is Rashard Mendenhall, but Washington is rated slightly higher and his bye week fits, too.

Round 10, pick 1
Hurting for WRs, there admittedly aren't a lot to chose from here. PC Drafter likes Chris Chambers and Deion Branch. I like Branch a little better. Percy Havin was there but I didn't want my number-three to be unproven, so hopefully he slides back to me and I can make him my number-four. This is one of those places where I'm kind of forced to take a WR whether I like them or not and I don't always think that's the best drafting strategy. Waiting longer, though, wouldn't be a good idea.

Round 11, pick 12
I still feel I need another WR so it has to be a selection with one of these two picks. The pickins are slim now but I do like Muhsin Muhammad.

As the backup quarterbacks begin to fall off the board, it's time to take one who fits in with Matt Ryan's bye. Chad Pennington plays the 49ers that week and that's a decent matchup. Jake Delhomme is available but the bye weeks don't match up.

Here's a spot where I can take a third QB I like. My bye week is covered with Pennington but when there are no limits on rosters it's not a bad idea to take a third QB. As Tom Brady proved, injuries can happen at any time.

Summary
PC Drafter rates my team top in overall points as well as starter points. Not bad for selecting last in a 12-team league. My weakest area is wide receiver. I like Moss and Jackson as my starters but an injury to one of those guys could crush me because I don't think Branch or Muhammad will make for valuable week-in and week-out starters. I have some depth at quarterback, especially if Ryan suffers from a sophomore slump. I feel I'm pretty solid at running back and I have the top defense, top tight end, and second-best kicker.
