Do you remember the Disney/Pixar animated film "The Incredibles"? Well, the villain, Syndrome, started his "path to the dark side" when Mr. Incredible denied his offer of assistance, under the very logical reason that the battles were no place for a "normal" person. So Syndrome sought to bring down the superheroes by inventing various gadgets that imitated super-powers. Gadgets that the everyday person could use. The phrase he repeated was, "When everyone's super...no one will be".

How does this relate to fantasy football? Let me tell you. Everyone's on facebook. Everyone's on Twitter. Everyone has access to all the latest info, breaking news and experts' analysis. What's happening is when a beat reporter drops a nugget that Brandon Cooks is primed for a breakout year, it's not just the hardcore fantasy football player that knows this anymore. It used to be. But not anymore. Now, EVERYONE knows. While it used to be only the hardcore fantasy footballers that would mark several of these guys as their "value targets" for draft day, anymore, EVERYONE is marking these guys as their "value targets". So just like Syndrome's philosophically profound phrase, when _______ is seen as a value by EVERYONE, he isn't a value for ANYONE. That player will be long gone before you get to draft him where he'd be a high value.

What do you do about it? In my opinion, it will be the boring picks that will win leagues this year. Read 4for4.com's articles on sleepers and values:

Take note of the guys that are getting little to no buzz. That's what we want. Those are the guys whom you'll truly be able to land at good value in your draft. A side note as I'm just typing out my thoughts here, using the word 'whom' correctly, I gotta be honest, kinda makes you feel like a genius. I highly recommend it. I feel like I should be wearing a monocle and a top hat while swirling a martini; shaken, not stirred. Anyway, getting back on track here, go for the mundane Boldin or humdrum Eddie Royal. The hype on Ameer Abdullah is quickly turning Joique Bell into the value pick of the two. Don't get me wrong, if the buzzy, sexy pick falls into your lap, take it, obviously. But I'm guessing more fantasy teams will make the playoffs because Colston will snag something like 9 tds and 900 yards in remarkably uninteresting fashion. Or Eli Manning will bore us to sleep as he finishes as a top 10 QB. You know, stuff like that. We no longer know more than our opponents. Let them be the ones to think they do.

I think genius is absolutely the right feeling you should have for grammatical accomplishments. Weird Al would b proud, as would my Communication Studies professors from grad school!

I agree with you. Sometimes guys get so hyped up that they lose their value. I still love Abdullah, but I'm seeing him go in the third round... he's not a sleeper/steal anymore when he's being drafted that high, even if he pans out.

John does a great job, and the links you threw out there are great examples of him talking about value, which is really what fantasy sports is all about. Try to take the guys that shouldn't be on the board when you pick.

Great stuff, and love the Incredibles reference!
