I am managing a draft for a league that is growing from 12 members to 18 - and I have a two part question: a) how should I deal with setting up the draft order and is it best to do the normal serpentine style or should we try some modification, if so what; then b) with a league that size, what is best practice for roster size and roster spot distribution.

Thanks

That's a big league! Unless you want to go to an auction draft, I would keep the serpentine method. I would also keep the same roster sizes, but I might cap out the QB/K/DEF/TE positions at 2 per roster. You could also roll the TE spot into WR's, which would allow those two roster spots to go to WRs/backs instead.

In similarly large leagues, I've gone with 16 player rosters, capping QB/K/DEF at 2 per. However, that's a 16 team league, where you still end up with two starters at each position. You may need to work out an agreement to where only 1 is allowed per roster except during bye weeks. Not sure if you can set it up that way on the website.

However you divy up the draft order should still work. If you go with the winner getting the first pick or something, you should still be able to do that for the top three spots or so, and then divy up the rest at random or do a drawing. I think that's the fairest way to go.
