How can you tell when a player's expected production doesn't exceed his cost in terms of salary cap hit.

I expect 75-85% of my cap to go to my starters, and really that means my backs and receivers, because QB's are much deeper, as are TE's beyond the top couple, and I always spend the minimum on K and Defense.

So if you're in a 100 dollar league, I'm probably expecting my starting QB to take up about 5-7 bucks, my TE to be 3-5 bucks, and the rest of the 80 bucks or so to go to my five backs/receivers. So then I'm either spending 50 bucks or so to get my top guy and then trying to find value at the other four spots, or I'm filling my roster with 10-30 dollar guys and hoping not to overpay.

So what this all means is that if you're looking at a guy's expected production, if he falls somewhere in your 3rd to 5th slot amongst your backs and receivers, then I'd consider him at up to 10-15% of your cap. If he's going to be 1st or 2nd, then I'd consider him at up to 30-50% of your cap, depending on if you're getting value elsewhere that gives you the opportunity to overspend.
