What a catch! Jets trade for star CLE WR Edwards

New York Daily News - [Full Article]

Desperate to find a proven starter to pair with Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets have traded for disgruntled Browns WR Braylon Edwards, the Daily News confirmed Wednesday morning.

The Jets dealt WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik and undisclosed draft choices to the Browns in the deal.

Once he learns the offense, Edwards will start with Cotchery.

Edwards, a first-round pick, is regarded as an elite talent, but he has been involved in a series of off-the-field incidents and wore out his welcome in Cleveland.

His contract expires after this season, but he may not be an unrestricted free agent. It depends on the CBA. If there's no salary cap in 2010, Edwards will be a restricted free agent.

It's not clear if the Jets extended Edwards' contract.

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to trade Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets on Wednesday morning, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Jets agreed to send key special teams player Jason Trusnik and draft picks to Cleveland, Schefter reported. Terms of the deal were still being finalized early Wednesday.

In Edwards, the Jets obtained a receiver that gives rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez the legitimate deep threat that the Jets have lacked -- and a player facing an NFL investigation for off-the-field trouble.

Browns coach Eric Mangini, in the wake of receiver Braylon Edwards allegedly punching a friend of LeBron James on Monday morning -- and Edwards' teammates getting involved -- made it clear misconduct will not be tolerated.
Edwards reportedly punched Edward Givens at 2:30 a.m. at the View Ultra-Lounge & Nightclub, 618 Prospect Ave., in Cleveland, and some of the receiver's teammates also reportedly threw punches to defend themselves.
"Personal conduct is very important to me," said Mangini. "It's important to us, and to the players. It's important today, it's important tomorrow. I always want our players to put themselves in the most positive positions."
He said he talked to Edwards about the incident on Monday and indicated Edwards was remorseful.
Given that Mangini fines players $1,701 for not paying their hotel incidentals and parking in other people's spots to help make them accountable, it's likely he'll fine Edwards and possibly other Browns if they were involved in the altercation. Edwards also faces possible discipline from the NFL under terms of its personal conduct policy.

Edwards accused of assault, jealousy of LeBron James

Yesterday was not a great day for Braylon Edwards(notes). He failed to get his hands on the ball even one time, as the Cleveland Browns lost an overtime heartbreaker to the rival Cincinnati Bengals.

Later that night, though, Braylon did allegedly get his hands on a fellow named Edward Givens. The name is blacked out from the police report, but multiple sources told Cleveland.com that Edwards is the suspect. Here's the story that Givens, a promoter of some kind with an organization called Eighty81, told police.

The man then went to a local hospital for a black eye, a cut and a headache. Given Braylon's hands of stone, it's a miracle that he doesn't have a fractured skull. Zing.

Cheap jokes aside, that's just one guy's story, so be careful how much stock you put in it. The jabs about LeBron make it seem even more petty and vindictive, so who knows what kind of an agenda this guy has. I'm not saying it's true, I'm not saying it's not, I'm just saying that it's just one guy's story. Braylon likely has a completely different view of things.

"Nobody's happy," said Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, who provided a huge spark in his first start this season. "We lost. Nobody's happy we went to overtime and played it to the last 10 seconds. That's not what we're here for."

Anderson, making his first start since Coach Mangini benched Brady Quinn, completed 26 of 48 passes for 269 yards, threw a 2-yard TD pass to Steve Heiden and ran for a score. Rookie Mohamed Massaquoi had eight catches for 148 yards.

Jamal Lewis is hampered by a hamstring injury and is in jeopardy of missing his second-straight game. Rookie James Davis (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, meaning the Browns are down to Jerome Harrison and rookie Chris Jennings for today and maybe more.

The Browns signed RB Chris Jennings off their practice squad and placed rookie RB James Davis on injured reserve. This means Jerome Harrison should get most of the carries this week if Jamal Lewis (doubtful) can't go.

CLE: Lewis and Dawson doubtful for CIN game
Saturday, October 3, 2009, 10:58am

Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

Browns RB Jamal Lewis, kicker Phil Dawson and guard Floyd Womack were all idle during today's practice and are doubtful for Sunday's game against the Bengals.

RB James Davis, who participated fully on Thursday, did not practice Friday and is questionable with a shoulder injury. Doubtful means there's a 25% chance of playing and questionable means 50%.

Coach Eric Mangini held out hope that some or all of the injured guys might play.

"I think there's a chance for all the guys,'' said Mangini. "You want to give them a chance to go to the end.''

If the ''doubtfuls'' can't play, Lewis (hamstring) will be replaced by Jerome Harrison, Dawson (calf) will be replaced by Billy Cundiff and Womack (ankle) will be replaced by Hank Fraley.
