Sprained ankle may keep Buckhalter on sideline

Through the perfect first quarter of this season, running back Correll Buckhalter has been at least the most versatile player, if not the most valuable, of the Broncos' offense.

There is a decent chance the MVP won't play Sunday against the New England Patriots at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Buckhalter was helped off the field with a badly sprained ankle in the third quarter of the Broncos' 17-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys and later left the stadium on crutches.

"We have a system in place here regardless of who's playing," offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said. "We're going to go out there and run our system, and we've got a number of talented guys in our backfield and we'll be just fine."

If Buckhalter can't play against the Patriots, rookie Knowshon Moreno may get his first NFL start. Moreno would likely be spelled by veteran Lamont Jordan.
