Rookies make impression at camp

The swagger, cockiness and bold promises that too often define the position of NFL WR did not make its way yesterday into the Giants' rookie mini-camp, as their two new targets, Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden, caught everything in sight then vowed to work to gain respect and playing time. "I feel like I'm ready for the next step, but at the same time nothing is going to be given to me," said Nicks, the 1st-round pick out of N.C. "Nothing is going to be put right in my hand. I don't expect it to." It certainly was encouraging for the Giants to check out the morning practice session on the Giants Stadium turf and see the hands of their 1st-year draft picks on display. All of a sudden it wasn't so far-fetched to envision Nicks inhaling passes over the middle or Barden stretching his 6-foot-6 frame to snare the ball up where few can reach.
