The severity of the injury that Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson sustained against the Broncos became more clear Monday with coach Pete Carroll announcing it's a high ankle sprain. The team's plan, however, is still unclear.
Carroll said the Seahawks are evaluating their options and that the team worked out an unspecified quarterback on Monday.
"We're looking at it," Carroll said.
Jackson was injured in Friday night's preseason opener when a Denver player fell on his right ankle. He limped off the field and was replaced by third-string quarterback R.J. Archer, who played the remainder of the game.
The Seahawks have another in-house option in B.J. Daniels, who was a practice squad quarterback before converting to wide receiver earlier this offseason. Carroll said Daniels will take some reps at quarterback and that as of now he would be the third quarterback if one were needed in a game.

Pryor seemed more erratic — a few really good plays but also some not-so-good.
Jackson was dependable. That may be Seattle’s choice at that spot and whether they want to keep two or three QBs — the consistency and dependability of Jackson versus the upside of Pryor. I think the preseason games will tell a lot there.

HC Pete Carroll talked about signing QBs that were similar in style to Russell Wilson. This may be part of that plan.

Once the team landed QB E.J. Manuel, the Bills had accomplished a prime objective. "Our goal coming in was to bring in another bell-cow quarterback to compete for the job [with newly signed Kevin Kolb and holdover Tarvaris Jackson], and we did that with E.J.," CEO Russ Brandon said. "Then we added some new tools in the toolbox."
It sounds as if Manuel will compete to start for the Bills.

Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's status appeared secure last month, when new coach Doug Marrone announced he informed Fitzpatrick and newly re-signed backup Tarvaris Jackson that he intends to have both compete for the starting job this offseason.
The Bills' message was less definitive a little more than a week later at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. That's where both GM Buddy Nix and team president Russ Brandon were evasive when discussing Fitzpatrick.

With Matt Flynn set to get his second straight start, it appears that is his job to lose.

Bucky Brooks of NFL.com on the Seattle QB competition:
The Seahawks recently announced that QB Matt Flynn will start the first game of the preseason, and I fully expect him to have that job when the regular season opens. He looked completely comfortable directing the offense, displaying superb accuracy and ball placement in drills. I was impressed with Flynn's movement skills within the pocket during 11-on-11 drills, as well as his ability to extend plays with his feet. He repeatedly connected on deep throws after eluding pressure; that element of his game could enhance the Seahawks' offense. Veteran Tarvaris Jackson and rookie Russell Wilson certainly had their moments during camp, but the job seems like Flynn's to lose at this point.

"I think that once he picks up this offense he'll be ahead of Flynn not only athletically but [in terms of] positional attributes as well," Softli said on the air with ESPN's John Clayton. "I like what Flynn brings to the table because he does have some experience, and I think it's going to be a good competition between the two, but when it's all said and done I think Wilson will be the guy."
