MIN RB Toby Gerhart pushing to be Peterson's backup
Monday, June 14, 2010, 2:19pm
Second-year pro RB Albert Young is ahead of second-round pick RB Toby Gerhart as Adrian Peterson's top backup, but it's probably only a matter of time until that changes.
Young is smaller and may have value as a situational, change-of-pace back. Gerhart is the move-the-chains guy the Vikings envision spelling Peterson -- whose unexcused minicamp absence should be a non-issue as long as the fumbling stops -- and playing on third downs.
Practice-squad holdover Ian Johnson did himself no favors by dropping a couple of passes over the weekend. Darius Reynaud brings a little more value as a scatback than he did as a receiver but still will need to make the team on returns.
Naufahu Tahi remains the starting fullback, and the Vikings don't need to keep more than one. Seventh-round pick Ryan D'Imperio, a converted linebacker, had to start from scratch in OTAs and has a long road ahead.
Grabbing Peterson's backup is nice mid-to-late round strategy, whether you're a Peterson owner or not. Keep an eye on this, because it seems like Gerhart would be the guy you want to take this year.

Vikings fullback Naufahu Tahi was added to the injury report today. He did not participate in practice because of a back injury.
Six players were limited in practice: Cornerback Antoine Winfield (foot), defensive tackle Pat Williams (elbow), tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (quadricep), punter Chris Kluwe (back), defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy (thumb) and guard Steve Hutchinson (shoulder).

Vikings right guard Anthony Herrera sat out of practice today because of a concussion and running back Adrian Peterson was limited because of an ankle injury.
Limited in practice were wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring); cornerback Antoine Winfield (foot); and fullback Naufahu Tahi (ankle). Linebacker E.J. Henderson (knee) and cornerback Benny Sapp (groin) were on the injury report but took part in all of practice.

Green Bay's defensive players weren't the ones to feel Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson's wrath this weekend.
Peterson and teammate Naufahu Tahi were involved in horseplay that accidentally led to the Vikings fullback being unable to play Sunday against the Packers, a source told FOXSports.com.
Peterson and Tahi were wrestling Saturday in the team's locker room when the latter accidentally injured the area around his eye. Vikings coaches believed Tahi was going to play Saturday night but had to declare him inactive for the Packers game after overnight swelling.
Even without his lead blocker, Peterson still rushed for 97 yards and one touchdown in Minnesota's 38-26 win over Green Bay.
Tahi, a four-year NFL veteran, had played in all seven of Minnesota's previous games this season with one start. His responsibilities in Minnesota's offense Sunday were assumed by backup tight end Jeff Dugan, who caught one of quarterback Brett Favre's four touchdown passes.
Berrian strains hamstring
Monday, October 26, 2009, 1:23pm
Vikings WR Bernard Berrian strained his left hamstring during the second quarter against the Steelers, but his status wasn’t immediately known.
Berrian pulled up lame on a second-and-15 pass play and limped to the sideline. He entered the game as the Vikings’ second-leading receiver with 234 yards.
Vikings FB Naufahu Tahi also left the game with an undisclosed injury suffered during the second quarter. Tahi returned to the field in the third quarter.
