Matt Schaub Fantasy News

Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 8:12pm - [Full Article]

As the Raiders finished the media window before Tuesday’s practice, rookie quarterback Derek Carr was not on the field.

Matt Schaub and Matt McGloin were set to take reps as team sessions began and the media was excused. Carr is scheduled to speak to the media following practice, as is coach Tony Sparano.

Carr left a 26-24 win over the Buffalo Bills briefly after getting a knee to the gluteus, Sparano said Monday. The fans booed as Schaub trotted on to the field, only to erupt in cheers when the Raiders called time out and Carr returned. Carr has started all 15 games for the Raiders as a rookie.

Raiders plan to stick with Derek Carr at QB

Tuesday, December 2, 2014, 2:35pm

ESPN - [Full Article]

Interim Oakland Raiders coach Tony Sparano has no intention of sitting Derek Carr the remainder of the season, one day after pulling the rookie quarterback in the fourth quarter of Oakland's blowout loss to St. Louis.

Carr had arguably his worst game as a pro against the Rams, throwing two costly interceptions while failing to engineer a single scoring drive. He failed to complete a pass longer than 18 yards and finished with a season-low 50.5 passer rating.

Don't read much into the move. Sparano said Carr will remain the team's starter and that there have been no discussions about resting the rookie.

"There hasn't been really any thought about that," Sparano said. "I didn't get a lot of those questions [when the Raiders won], so there really hasn't been a lot of that kind of thought. There was a thought about that in the fourth quarter of the game when I decided to do that and that was purely my decision to do that at that point. There was just no need to keep Derek out there at that point any longer. Give Matt an opportunity to go out there and let Matt play a little bit and that was that."

Fantasy Impact:

Sparano removed Carr early in the fourth quarter and replaced him with veteran Matt Schaub, who had an even rougher time than Carr. Schaub lost a fumble on his first drive then threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown on his second drive the story pointed out.

Raiders QB Derek Carr (ankle, knee, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 6. Carr is expected to start against the Chargers, though the Raiders play late on Sunday. Matt Schaub likely gets the start if Carr can’t go.

Raiders QB Derek Carr sprains ankle, MCL

Sunday, September 28, 2014, 8:08pm - [Full Article]

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was sidelined with a high ankle sprain and MCL sprain in the third quarter.

Carr's knee was twisted at the end of a scramble. Despite a heavy limp, he stayed in for one more play before it became obvious that he couldn't put any weight on the leg.

He was promptly sent to the locker room for X-rays and did not return.

The rookie authored an impressive opening touchdown drive vs. the Miami Dolphins, but failed to move the offense over the next two quarters.

Fantasy Impact:

Matt McGloin took over for Carr and did throw for a TD pass but it was an overall ugly performance for the Raiders offense. Matt Schaub didn't make the trip to England and the Raiders have a bye in Week 5. Carr's injury is said to keep him out a couple of weeks, so right now it's anyone's guess as to who starts in Week 6.

Raiders QB Matt Schaub (not injury related, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 4.

Raiders QB Matt Schaub 'definitely disappointed' with being benched

Wednesday, September 3, 2014, 2:00pm

Pro Football Talk - [Full Article]

Matt Schaub was watching rookie Derek Carr light it up in the preseason, but he didn’t think that had anything to do with him.

The supplanted Raiders quarterback admitted he was surprised to be benched in favor of the second-round pick

“I’m definitely disappointed, but it wouldn’t do me or the team any good if I just stood here and felt sorry for myself,” Schaub said, via Scott Bair of “I only know how to handle things one way. That’s to move forward and stay productive and get myself ready each day so I’m prepared if called upon.”

Fantasy Impact:

We currently have Carr ranked #27 in our draft rankings, though it's not advisable to start him this week on the road against the Jets. His presence under center may ultimately be the best thing for the Oakland offense, though only time will tell.

Report: Derek Carr to start at QB for Raiders

Monday, September 1, 2014, 6:33pm - [Full Article]

Raiders players have been told that Derek Carr will be the starting quarterback over Matt Schaub, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted Monday.

The Raiders reconvened to begin preparations to face the New York Jets and begin practice at 3:45 p.m.

Glazer has good relationship with Raiders coach Dennis Allen from the time when Allen worked on the staff of Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Impact:

Schaub missed three days of practice leading up to the preseason finale against Seattle. Carr completed 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns as the Raiders had touchdowns in all four of his possessions. Schaub was away from the facility Friday because of a “personal issue.” Carr out-played Schaub who really struggled at times in the preseason. As a result, the Raiders say this isn't a week-to-week situation with Carr, he's going to be the starter for the long haul. Carr has much more upside, but is likely going to make his share of mistakes. It's not a great first matchup against the Jets, however they ranked just 25th in allowing fantasy points to QBs last season. Look for the Raiders to try to get the running game going early to take pressure off Carr, however the Jets are expected to again be good against the run.

Raiders still undecided about who will start Week 1

Friday, August 29, 2014, 9:35pm

ESPN - [Full Article]

Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Friday he will know who his starting quarterback for their Week 1 game at the New York Jets early in the week.

“I think the biggest thing is I want to be able to check on (Matt Schaub) and see where Matt is health-wise,” Allen said. “Like I said, he was making some progress last week, threw on the side with the trainers. I feel like he’ll be ready to go, but I think we need to see how he’s doing Monday when he gets in here.”

“I was very pleased with what I saw out of Derek Carr last night,” Allen said. “We’ve said all along that Derek is going to be a really good quarterback in this league and he’s shown those signs, and you’ve seen those signs, throughout practices. It was good to see that our whole group offensively was able to go out and function the way that they did last night.”

Fantasy Impact:

Neither player is much of a fantasy option, but Carr looked good last night while Schaub has been pretty dreadful all preseason. The beat writers seem to think that Carr will get the start.

Raiders Beat: Derek Carr may start in Week 1

Bill Williamson, Twitter - [Full Article]

Raiders beat writer Bill Williamson: HC Dennis Allen won't say it but my guess is we see Derek Carr against the Jets.

Fantasy Impact:

Matt Schaub is supposedly dealing with a sore elbow, which may open the door for the Raiders to start Carr who looked good in the final preseason game last night.

Raiders QB Derek Carr plays well in final preseason game

Friday, August 29, 2014, 1:39am

Raiders QB Derek Carr passed for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the team's final preseason game against the Seahawks.

Fantasy Impact:

The pressure is on Matt Schaub to produce quickly. He hasn't looked good in the preseason and may be replaced early in the season if he can't get it together.

The Raiders insist it's not an audition, just a chance for QB Derek Carr to get in some much-needed work.

Yet with starting quarterback Matt Schaub sitting out Thursday night's game against the Seattle Seahawks at Coliseum with a sore right elbow, the Raiders quarterback of the future can speed up that process in front of a home fan base that is embracing his candidacy through social media.

Fantasy Impact:

Carr could get extended work and a chance to make another good impression if Schaub continues to struggle or not be able to play due to his elbow. Carr, a second-round draft pick out of Fresno State, appears firmly entrenched as the backup even though second-year player Matt McGloin has put up the best numbers, albeit against mostly third-team competition.
