Jeremy Shockey was one of eight players who did not practice Thursday as the New Orleans Saints got back to work for the first time this week. The others were safety Darren Sharper (knee), cornerback Randall Gay (foot), cornerback Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring), linebacker Jonathan Vilma (knee), defensive end Will Smith (groin), tailback Lynell Hamilton (ankle) and kick returner Courtney Roby (knee).

Offensive tackle Zach Strief (shoulder) was limited. Everyone else fully participated.

It's still too early to read much into the Saints' injury list, which is longer than usual. Coach Sean Payton said it's partly to give some extra rest to guys with the game still 10 days away.

"We're trying to look closely like we always do," Payton said. "I think a little bit is based off the fact that we backed off a few of these guys. We'll continue to rehab and get the treatment they need and progress here as we get closer."

Sharper and Vilma, in particular, have been getting some occasional days off late in the season to rest lingering knee soreness. Smith's injury doesn't appear to be serious, either. The other five players could remain questionable into next week, though.

Saints HC Sean Payton gave an injury update. He said kickoff returner Courtney Roby "dinged" his knee and tailback Lynell Hamilton injured his ankle during Sunday's 31-28 overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings. But he said he didn't think either injury was serious. He said tight end Jeremy Shockey is "making progress" with his knee injury after being limited on Sunday. And he said cornerback Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring) should be in good shape in another two weeks after being inactive on Sunday.

The Saints were allowed to come in late for work on Monday, but they still had to do their usual running and lifting on the day after the game, much to the chagrin of some sleep-deprived players who are still running on adrenaline.

They'll be off Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The six Pro Bowl players will travel to Miami on Sunday, then the rest of the team will join them on Monday.

Lance Moore, Kendrick Clancy and Sedrick Ellis are out

New Orleans Times-Picayune - [Full Article]

Saints receiver Lance Moore and defensive tackles Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy were officially ruled out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Linebacker Scott Fujita is listed as questionable with a calf strain, though his return seems unlikely this week since he still has not practiced. And kicker Garrett Hartley is listed as doubtful after tweaking his ankle during Friday's practice.

Three other Saints are listed as probable after practicing fully on Friday -- center Jonathan Goodwin (knee), cornerback Malcom Jenkins (ankle) and linebacker Marvin Mitchell (foot).

The Saints will likely have to add a defensive tackle to their roster on Saturday, though Coach Sean Payton didn't announce the team's plans. He said practice squad tackle DeMario Pressley is a possibility, or the team could consider internal options, such as moving a defensive end over to tackle if needed.

With Moore out, receiver/kickoff returner Courtney Roby is available as a fourth receiver, though he isn't expected to be heavily involved on offense

Sean Payton said Robert Meachem will return kicks in the team's third exhibition game Saturday at Oakland.

If Meachem shows the coaching staff that he also can return kicks, then that might eliminate several players who are viewed primarily as return specialists, most notably Skyler Green and Courtney Roby.

Times Picayune: The Saints released backup tight end Sean Ryan on
Thursday, which could be a sign that Shockey's return is imminent.
He was replaced on the roster by receiver/return specialist
Courtney Roby.

Monday, December 8, 2008, 12:00am

Times Picayune: The Saints placed kickoff returner Courtney Roby
on injured reserve, officially ending his season with the ankle
injury he suffered in Sunday's victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
They also waived CB David Pittman to trim their roster down to 53
players. Aside from Roby's injury, he Saints are fairly healthy
heading into their quick turnaround before Thursday night's game
at Chicago. Coach Sean Payton said he hopes left tackle Jammal
Brown will be able to bounce back from a sprained ankle and that
CB Randall Gay will be able to return after suffering a
concussion. Payton said the team will be cautious with Gay but
that the follow-up tests on his condition Monday were promising.
With Roby out, the Saints might use Pierre Thomas as a full-time
kickoff returner, even though he has become a centerpiece of their
offense. Payton said this time of year, it becomes more common for
teams to use their starters on special teams when necessary.
