Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is bringing an old friend with him to Atlanta.
The Falcons announced Wednesday that they have signed Rex Grossman. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported he will sign a one-year deal, per a source informed of the contract. The 35-year-old has now worked with Shanahan over three stops in Washington, Cleveland and Atlanta.
Manziel's season ends with 18 completions on 35 passes for 175 yards on 15 drives and roughly seven quarters of NFL play.
Now the problem for the Browns is Brian Hoyer is questionable with a shoulder injury suffered in the second half Sunday, prompting the Browns to elevate undrafted rookie Connor Shaw from the practice squad. Shaw will get significant first-team reps this week, coach Mike Pettine said, and the Browns also could sign a backup, the story said. The article went on to say the Browns called Rex Grossman about joining the team for one week, but that move is unlikely, as Grossman said the two sides couldn't work out business logistics during Christmas week.
Buccaneers beat writer Pat Yasinskas: Coach Lovie Smith has been coy about his plans. My best guess is Mike Glennon will get at least one more start because Josh McCown returned to practice only this week and was out for more than a month. I think Glennon has played well enough to be the full-time starter, but I'm not sure Smith sees it that way. McCown was Smith's hand-picked quarterback and the two have history together from their Chicago days. Smith's history has shown he prefers to go with veterans. Back in Chicago, he once benched Kyle Orton, who was playing well, as soon as Rex Grossman got healthy. It wouldn't surprise me if Smith goes back to McCown.

The Browns will roll with just two quarterbacks after all.
The team cut veteran third-string quarterback Rex Grossman as part of the trimming necessary to make room for waiver claims, a league source confirmed Sunday for the Beacon Journal, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Browns have yet to announce the move. ProFootballTalk.com reported the news Sunday after USA Today reported the move was expected.

As it is, he'll play up to a quarter and then give way to Johnny Manziel, who will finish out the half and possibly play into the third quarter. Rex Grossman and Connor Shaw will likely split the second half, coach Mike Pettine said.
But Hoyer said after the 33-14 loss to the Rams Saturday that he welcomes a chance to play. Hoyer and the first-team offense have produced only one touchdown in 14 possessions and Hoyer has earned a 63.7 rating.

Grossman, 33, gives the Browns a veteran backup who's fluent in the system employed by new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Grossman spent the past five seasons with Shanahan -- one with the Houston Texans and the last four with the Washington Redskins.

The Dolphins have had some injury concerns at backup quarterback this summer and they’re responding by taking a look at a veteran option to add to the mix.
During an appearance on WSVN in Miami on Sunday, agent Drew Rosenhaus announced that his client Rex Grossman would work out for the Dolphins on Monday. Rosenhaus said other quarterbacks would be working out for the team as well, although Grossman was the only one named.
NFL Network, which had earlier reported Cousins would start, reported that Redskins players have been told that Griffin will be inactive for Sunday's game and veteran Rex Grossman would be the backup quarterback.
Coach Mike Shanahan raised the possibility Monday of benching Griffin for the last three regular-season games, citing 24 sacks in the past five games and the desire to keep him healthy for the offseason. Griffin's offseason work this year was compromised by the major knee injury he suffered in the team's playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks in January.
Cousins has one NFL start in his career -- Week 15 last year against the Browns in Cleveland. He threw for 329 yards on 26-of-37 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed three times for 22 yards. He was the #7 QB that week. He comes in at #19 in a nice matchup against the Falcons, though he carries some risk since the Redskins organization is a dysfunctional mess right now. Alfred Morris may see a few extra carries, but the defense won't have to respect Cousins' running ability as much, so they can key on Morris. Pierre Garcon looks like an upside WR2, while Jordan Reed -- if healthy -- isn't a bad option at tight end.
