On the release of TE Michael Matthews, Belichick said, “He came in and did a good job, but we decided to move in a different direction.” Oh, and the team did not have to give up that 2011 pick for him, since he didn’t meet the conditions…
As for the roster, Belichick said the two reserve guys — Mark LeVoir and Brandon Tate – did practice but have not been activated. Then he gave an inkling for what’ll happen later in the week.

A day after trading tight end Michael Matthews to the Patriots for a conditional 2011 draft pick, the Giants brought in former Patriots TE Alex Smith for a visit Sunday, according to a person familiar with the action. The person requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on behalf of the Giants or Smith.
The 6-4, 258-pound Smith was cut by New England Saturday. Smith didn't make the Patriots' 53-man roster because of his inadequacies as a blocking tight end and perhaps his $1.5 million salary.
