The Redskins spent a seventh-round pick on Arkansas place kicker Zach Hocker this spring, hoping to bring in a youngster with a strong leg who would challenge incumbent Kai Forbath.

Their competition lasted all preseason, with the rookie shining initially, hitting a pair of field goals and making a special-teams tackle during the opener against New England, while Forbath was short on his lone attempt from 46 yards.

But Saturday morning, roughly eight hours before the NFL’s deadline for final roster cuts, it was Hocker who was released.

Fantasy Impact:

It all came down to Thursday’s preseason finale at Tampa Bay, in which Hocker missed his lone field-goal attempt, from 39 yards, wide right. Forbath delivered from 45 yards to open the scoring. Forbath usually struggles to make our top kicker list, but if Washington's offense can find its way Forbath could be a spot starter if needed.

For Redskins kicker Kai Forbath, that pressure mounted as Jay Gruden became coach of the Redskins and the team promptly selected a rookie kicker in the 2014 NFL Draft. Forbath's success as an accurate field goal kicker came under Mike Shanahan, and his shorter kickoffs have been an issue most of his two years with Washington.

On Thursday night, with a very public battle brewing between Forbath and rookie Zach Hocker, the incumbent did himself no favors. Forbath missed a 46-yard field goal, and compounded his problem by sending a kickoff out of bounds.

The Redskins during previous years generally would bring in a veteran kicker to compete with the incumbent during the offseason. But this year, Jay Gruden used a seventh-round pick to draft Arkansas’s Zach Hocker, who ranked among the league leaders on kickoffs. Hocker during offseason practices also has done well on field-goal attempts, putting more pressure on Kai Forbath.

The two will continue to compete throughout training camp, but the true test will come during the four preseason games.

Forbath would seem to have the edge because of his experience, and Gruden acknowledged that it’s rare for a rookie kicker to encounter much success.

However, the Redskins thought enough of Hocker to draft him rather than trying to sign him as an undrafted free agent, where they could have risked losing out on him to another team.

Fantasy Impact:

Just passing this along to let readers know that Forbath is not the safest pick at this point in the offseason. He's likely to win the job, but it's worrisome that the team used a draft pick on a kicker.

The Redskins do know that they need to improve in the area of touchbacks, and that’s part of why they drafted Zach Hocker – to compete with Kai Forbath. Meanwhile, Forbath also knows that he must to better in this department, and so he has spent the offseason trying to get better at this. He is – as you noted – very accurate on field goals, and his experience should give him an edge. Jay Gruden acknowledged that it’s hard for a rookie place kicker to come in and have success. But they want to see what Hocker has to offer. The two will compete throughout training camp and the preseason.
