Giants RB Brandon Jacobs is expected to make his first start in nearly two years on Thursday night. And it may not be his last.
That all depends on what former starter David Wilson hears on Monday when he gets a second opinion on his injured neck. As it is, Wilson is out of the Giants’ Thursday night game in Chicago with what one NFL source said is a disc-related injury. Another source familiar with the injury said the Giants believe Wilson will likely be out several weeks.
But nothing will be certain until Wilson meets with Dr. Robert Watkins, a spinal surgeon in Los Angeles. As one source said “With treatment, this thing could settle down within a couple of weeks.”
It's a sad state of affairs for the Giants, who turn to Jacobs, a player who often couldn't crack the gameday roster of the 49ers last season. Wilson owners should hold on for another week and see if his prognosis improves after his second opinion early next week. Consider Jacobs a RB4-type for the time being. DaRel Scott will likely to have more value in PPR formats.

Giants RB David Wilson (neck, out) was ruled out for Week 6. Brandon Jacobs will get the start. DaRel Scott will likely come in on passing downs. This is a mess that should be avoided if at all possible.
But the Giants also re-signed running back DaRel Scott, who was cut just a week ago. It's possible they could look for a more desirable replacement next week, when they have 10 days between games and can get a new backup to speed. But Scott made the most sense as a fill-in on this short week because of his familiarity with the offense. The only other halfback on the roster is rookie Michael Cox.
"I can handle a full workload, there's no question," Jacobs said. "I might be hurting the next day, but I can definitely handle a full workload or whatever they ask of me."
This is a bad place to look for fantasy value given the matchup (CHI) and the likelihood that the Giants fall behind and abandon the running game. DaRel Scott is in the mix, and may end up playing more snaps than Jacobs due to his previous role on third down. But the fact that he was recently cut by the team makes him a very dicey start as well. Avoid if possible.

Giants RB DaRel Scott (knee, probable) took full practice reps again Friday and is probable for Week 2. His presence will shorten the leash on David Wilson, though we expect Wilson to bounce back after a miserable Week 1 performance.

Giants RB DaRel Scott (knee) took full practice reps Thursday after being limited Wednesday. Scott's participation indicates that he'll be ready to play on Sunday. His presence muddies the waters with regard to David Wilson's potential workload, though we're expecting Wilson to get a chance to redeem himself.

Giants RB DaRel Scott (knee) took limited practice reps Wednesday. Scott injured his knee in practice, but an MRI showed no structural damage. Even so, this should boost the chances that David Wilson gets a heavy workload against the Broncos in Week 2.

The Giants like former Redskins running back Ryan Torain -- who was the next running back into the game after Andre Brown got hurt -- as a pass protector. And Da'Rel Scott got significant action Thursday night for the first time this preseason and looked good as a runner. Rookie Michael Cox has impressed as a runner and a kick returner, but he likely has more to learn in protection.
Torain may fill in for Brown, but isn't a threat to David Wilson's workload.
